Hi,

I was just wondering if it would be possible to raise the file size of avatars to say 25Kb (instead of the current 16Kb). I would like to add the avatars for people to use, but there is no way to get the file size down to 16Kb without really killing the quality. I do love that XS allows avatars of 180x180 pixels, but 16Kb is really kill me :(

I got it (the second one) down to 12k (16k on disc) with 10% compression on JPG... bump the brightness a tad and its pretty close to the original.

one (original) is 22kb, the other is just under 8kb. look very close to the same, no one will ever give a damn.

lol, neither am i.

i just used a small photo viewing program called infranview.

great for quickly viewing, resizing and saving photos.

you can change the quality of the jpeg when you save it, it can greatly reduce file size while keeping image quality almost the same.

What is "free I suppose" suppose to mean?

That this programm is absolutly free to use. And it`s very convinient one I must admit.

Also small tip for you guys:
After photochoping your pic open it in Paint and save as JPEG - you`d notice that it`s size decreases pretty much :)

or in photoshop hit ctrl + alt + shift + s when saving, to save for web, gives you good control over how optimized it gets :D

I didn't actually download it, I use faststone, but the "I suppose" part was because everything I could see was leaning towards free.

Not to mention the quality.

Paint saves them at a rather high compression.

PaintShop Pro gives you quality options when you save (or save-as if there is an existing version already where you are going to save it).

I use PSP6... very old but the newer versions confuse me ;)

Thanks stevil I used to use 6 but have got my hands on the new one for free so I am trying to get used to it!! The main problem I have with the new one is it seems to take a really long time to load and show a pic!! I want it to come up right now and then load all the junk after I can see the pic!! paintshop pro gives you the options but takes a way form the pic when it is saved!! or so I have found!!! like I said before I am not very good with it either!! :)

Yes Irfanview is free and always has been, it can also play media files and music if you get the plugins.

Had to re-jump in on this, just for when people bring this up again in the future. If nothing else, M$ will be supporting a new image format with better compression than .jpg with Vista, which allows up to 24:1 compression (vs. 6:1 with .jpg) while still retaining a higher image quality.

Infran view is awsome I ran across it along time ago.

On subject I had to change the quality of my advatar also to get it to fit, no big deal as it looks identical to me.

One thing I do kinda miss and it supprises me is lack of animated gif's as advatars. I wouldnt mind smaller size for them like 100x100 or 120x120 but its nice to be able to use them.

I have never seen forums with advatars so large tho, and sig size is very generous too.
