View Full Version : Vid card ramsinks - What's your experience with them?

I've never even owned a video card that came with ramsinks, let alone put them on myself. I've done some pretty wild GPU air-cooling, but just never messed around with cooling the memory.
My question is this:

What kind of performance increase could one expect w/ a decent set of ramsinks on a card like my Abit G4 Ti4200?

Stock clock on the memory is 500MHz...and I've maxed out at 614MHz w/ no additional cooling. Now I'm sorta wondering if ramsinks or something of the sort might get me a bit higher? If I would find out to expect 5MHz or so, then I probably wouldn't waste my money/time. Mind you, I'm not one bit disappointed with this memory OC! But the need for speed is always present ;)

So, what do YOU think of ramsinks? :)

Edit: Forgot so say...these are TSOP chips btw.

DOes de Ram's get HOT?
If soo, it may efect if u put ramsink's.
But if the mem runs at a normal temp, then prolly no!

Well, what's considered hot? :)

I have a thermometer here at work that shoots a laser point and measures surface temp...i could take this thing home this weekend and see what the temps are @ 614MHz...but what would be considered "hot"?

I took this thing home when I hit a max of 570MHz w/ the Gainward I had's memory, and the chips measured a temp of 95f or 35c. This would seem relatively cool to me...but I'm not sure what "too hot" would be for a memory chip as opposed to a GPU or CPU.

ITs not too HOT, but it's hot :p
But u may not gain any mhz out of it if u put some ramsinks tho :(

Thx AndrOvr, much appreciated :)

How bout a 2nd to AndrOvr's opinion :D

Anyone else?

Yeah, remember I said in the Ti4200 Vmod thread I had a Hercules R8500, I tried the RAM @640DDR and it was OK but it gets soooo hot and starts to artifact so... I think cooling is a good sttart coes it can do a lot if it can do 3runs of 3Dmark and then start to artifact (carchace and Low res draghotic)

When VOlt moded, u should use ramsinks ;)

the Hercules radeon was not Vmodded and was hot...

I will give you an example of one video card I used before. It was a ti 4400. No ram sinks would do 715 before I experienced a lock up in 3dmark 2001se. Mind you that was also with the GPU at 310 - 315.

Placing ram sinks allowed me to hit 730 with same 310 (from memory) on GPU. V-mod and she did 770!
Ram sinks used were the blue Thermaltake. THe amazing thing was they were 3.6ns ram chips. A mixture of week 208 and 211.

Mind you every card will perform differently. That one was a good card for a 4400.

15MHz is an impressive gain for BGA memory just from ramsinks. Thx for the info :)

I still wanna here more ;)

No matter whether a vid card is oc'd or not, it's always an advantage to keep chips cool as it extends their life, and could offer better stability... I have heatsinks attached to nearly every chip visible in my system, including on soundcards, network cards and even in my cable modem... or perhaps I'm just a bit nuts...

thats a lot of heatsinks.

just what happens when there's loads of 486 heatsinks around the place and i get let loose with a dremel...
