View Full Version : Watercooling solution for 9700 Pro Memory?

Anyone seen a watercooling solution marketed yet for the Radeon 9700 memory surfaces?
The best water implementation I have come across so far is here:
http://www.deviantpc.com/articles/ati9700wc/index.shtml
Looks like it would require some real work to cover all eight surfaces with two custom blocks (+$$$ and/or much time).
Does anyone know of another effective approach to cooling all the Radeon memory chips other than regular air sinks? I am convinced I can get the memory up to 390, maybe 400 with good cooling. I am currently limited at 371, but can still implement the VDD mod and want to cool those suckers first.
I am also toying with some ideas but wanted to get feedback first.

Im starting to design some peltier ram cooling for my 9700 using four 17watt pelts.
Ill try and draw it up over the weekend for you to look at.
I could also do with a look at a 9800 to see if the blocks will be compatible...

this is gona sound soooo rude but....
Can you take a look at my 3dmark score... your graphics card seems to be clocked way better than mine yet I beat you in 2001 (you beat me by 200 points in 2003)
My card is only clocked 390/310

I cant beleve that FSB and a few mhz on the CPU is worth so much, I thought it was all about the graphics card...

Here is my solution to cool the memory. Thanks go to Foxx (Moderator at AMDMB Forum) for hosting my pics.

And it did not sound rude to me Holst (to point out you got better scores at lower timings). I publish my madonion scores so that we can all compare notes and learn from each other's success.
I have not fully optimized my system as I have been busy with the block loop design. Stay tuned, I should get better scores soon...
(BTW, what AGP freq did you choose, and what agp size did you use, 256?)

Well guys dont take this wrong but you may be wasting you time.
i have built a very special -30c temp cooled memory cooler and quess what...it made no differance.the radeon i bench with has nothing more than air cooled heatsinks on it at the moment.
now this may be just mine but it made me do differance at all.
this is a pic of mine .

...Bowman, we have spoken about this before and you shared with me that it did not improve your results. Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure it did not help in your specific situation.
For those of us that don’t have a Phase-change cooled GPU and the associative cooling it brings to the memory, this mod might make more sense.
Watercooling the GPU with the same spiral block, I enjoy 5-7 Degrees C cooler temps at my GPU measuring point after I added the water cooling the memory. I can only draw the conclusion that heat from my memory was actually being collected through the GPU/ water interface. Now that temps on the PCB board are so much lower, the GPU block can remove more heat specifically from the R300.
And, for those of us that don’t have the noise of phase-change compressors in our office, going with H2O allows me to go fanless…another beautiful thing about watercooling is the silence it brings.
Apples and oranges my friend….

yea i forget sometimes who and when.
yea the water cooled fanless is a very nice idea.i wouldnt mind being able to think in peace and quite sometimes.you can'nt imagine how loud a couple of compressors and water pumps can be.
i see what you are talking about.

Id forgotten about that mod you did bowman... maybee ill just make myself some nice copper ramsinks and TEC the GPU instead.
So is ram speed on radeon just down to the chips you have as mine arnt great :( macci's card does 370 with no extra cooling at all, mine craps out at 310.
I dont realy want to voltmod as I cant afford to kill my card.
as for my AGP frequency im still on 66 ,I havent tried tweaking that yet, AGP apeture is 256mb I havent tweaked this either.
one day ill get a fesh hard drive and put winxp on there for a propper benchmarking drive, my current win2k install is ages old im sure it costs me a few points..

Notice I had to use "U", "Z', and "Twisted Z" shapes to get the hose routing to clear my motherboard's memory.

zip, are those brass or copper?

These are brass fittings. Would have used copper if available, brass is about 1/4 as good with heat transfer vs. copper.
On the flip side, these prove more than adaquate for cooling these memory chips as they cover 100% of the surface area and the elbows have pretty big cavities inside and pretty thin walls (really do a remarkably good job collecting heat from the chips...better than I expected actually).
I would not use these fittings to cool a CPU, but they were close enough to the correct size and shape to work perfectly for these memory surfaces.

oh btw zip, i have one of those techcool units, but I took out the res, install a Iwaki MD-20R-115NL03 Water Pump. Change all the tubing and fittings to 5/8 id. changed the fans to 120x35 mech fans@128 cfm per fan. change the cloth air filter to black steel mesh (much better air flow)

It's looks easy enough to mod.
Yeah, I’ve thought about fitting a second radiator in mine. The fan upgrade would help too, but original fans in there are quiet, though.
I think the techcool looks cool. What color did you get?
I bet the mesh does allow better flow, but I'd be worried about dust fuss accumulating on the radiator fins over time. If you vacuum the cloth filter often, it helps.

Mine is blue. zip, do you know what heater core is installed in these?

but I can easily measure the dimensions (in sig.) and was told it was the same capacity as one advertized to dissipate 2200W. I bet an auto parts store or online reference could narrow the search down pretty quickly.
But I think I'm going to make this my hot water loop and add pelts to get a little chill to my fluids. Gotta see some temps before I determine if I need any more mods on the Techcool.
Gotta get another pump for my main system. How loud is that Iwiki of yours?

very quiet, also very little heat in water

E-bay or online? How much did you spend?
thanks

is was brand new off off of ebay, $100 with shipping. also are the water blocks glue on?
zippyc
04-06-2003, 10:43 PM
Yes,
I glued the blocks on with Artic Silver Epoxy. It is important to note that I appled the blocks and adhesive to the board only after I taped it all over (except for the ram surfaces)with painter's masking tape.
That way I did not short out the legs of the ram when I applied the nasty stuff, and I used just enough to get the job done.
It is real easy to chip off a componet or scratch the PCB board if you don't protect it somehow while you fit your blocks.

Bowman,
Holy Jesus, when I saw your Computer, I was in awe.
dude, your seriously the king kong of super cooling.
I am just gonna call you godzilla from now on.
I thought my PC was crazy with a prometeia, and watercooling on the northbridge and videocard, chilled to 10 below zero with a custom made waterchiller.
but damn...
your PC is just insane.
zippyc,
due to your unique design for the angled barbs on the side.
I think I have a small project for this weekend.
may not make much of a difference.
but then again, it might.
I have enough spare parts to give it a try.
looks like fun.
thanks for posting the pic.
