I have a Seagate Barracuda SATA 200GB hard drive that no longer seems to work. Just repeatedly makes a clicking noise.
My question is, if I was to RMA this, would they thoroughly check all the data on my harddrive?
What is the procedure for the RMA on a hard drive? Do they just see it's nmot working and send a replacement or do they try to repair it first?

If anything dodgy is on your hard drive, would they report you to any authorities or would they assume "what the customer does on his hard drive is really no concern to us"

Sounds silly but if I can get RMA without any problem I'll be happy, otherwise I'll be stuck with a paper weight.

Let's just say I really hope you're only talking about pirated software.

But no, they don't care about your data at all. As far as I understand their system, they'll take back your drive and give it a test. If it won't work for them, they may run a quick diagnostic test on it if possible, and otherwise just ship a new drive right to you. The time and effort it would take them to care about your data just isn't worth it to them.

I know that with some companies this process can take a ridiculous amount of time (I have had friends who waited over 6 months)... but I think Seagate is pretty quick about it, as far as hard drive manufacturers go.

Lol I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say on here so I tried to refrain from saying anything incriminating.
Thanks for the info but I'm still kind of worried. I don't want to face prosecution.

I have seen numerous setups , where that clicking sound was caused by a weak or failing power supply. Sometimes its just one or two plugs from the power supply that are weak.

I was in a rush to change around components, even though I knew better I kind of pulled out the power cable from the hard drive while the computer was still on. Ever since it just exhibits that clicking sound.

I tried the hard drive in my external enclosure too to make sure it wasn't the motherboard or the cables. Still makes that clicking sound. It's definitely the hard drive.

If it's anything other than pirated softwares, well... I personally ban you from the Internet anyway.

Otherwise, I can tell you definitively today that they will not, having had a friend just get a hard drive back from Segate (and I know that the one he sent in was his application drive, very little of which was legally purchased). Apparently it took them a few weeks to get his hard drive, at which time they sent him an e-mail, then another few weeks to get it back.

Thanks. I'm going to phone them up tomorrow about an RMA.
