Well yeah if you can return your X1900XT, then get the 7950GX2.

If you play 1600x and higher resolutions with a lot of filtering (AA|AF), 7950 GX2. Particularly, if you want to use things like transparency anti-aliasing. (Adpative for ATi)

If you do 1280x with some degree of filtering, save some cash and get a X1900 XT. Do not buy a XTX, it is not worth the extra cash and many XTs overclock far beyond XTX clocks.

For what games? Also, what resolution will you be playing at, cause the X1900 can handle everything I play at 1680x1050 w/max settings.

Sell your XTX, wait for X1950XTX to come out and buy that :D

Its not any more ridiculous than buying 7950gx2 when DX10 is coming end of year

Even when DX10 comes, its not like every big game engine is going to be released with it.

The 7950GX2 isn't a bad choice, but the X1900 can handle many games just fine at resolutions higher than 1280x1024. In the end it really is all dependent on what you're wanting to do, what games you're wanting to play and with what settings.

X1950XTX Should be interesting though...if you sell your XTX before mid August, you can buy the X1950 for less than $100 more.

You're better off keeping your XTX though...because its not worth going through the process of selling it and spending extra when you'll upgrade again soon and at a time when prices for the 7950GX2 will also have fallen.

I think the 7950GX2 and X1950XTX are just pathetic attempts to try and get the last punch for DX9. Their life spans are pretty short for being so close to revolutionary cards like G80 and R600, and while they both do some experiments for their corresponding companies (GDDR4 for ATI and SLI in a box for Nvidia), both seem to be negligble once you factor in the dynamic GPU's that those features would eventually be coupled with.

Well if you a have x1900 then wait for the R600, you will lose some money by offloading the x1900 and then buying the 7950GTX2 ( the R600 will end up faster anyway, since the 7900gtx is faster than 2 7800GTX SLI) and then lose some more when the new gen is released, so just wait and lose a little less, just my 2 cents.:toast:

Buy something cheaper like a X1900GT and hold out till Q4.

Or you could buy an EVGA 7950GX2. G80 is rumored to be out in a month or two, and when it hits you could probably get one for very little considering the step-up price.

My recommendation:
If you want something now, wait a bit for the x1950xt.
If you game on 19x12 resolutions or higher at intensive video settings, get a single 7950gx2 for about $150 - $100 more than the x1900xt/x1950xt

What I do NOT recommend:
Dont get a x1900xt since it uses a bit more voltage at idle and a bit less voltage at load vs a 7950gx2 and it produces a lot more heat as a result.
The shrink in die and the integration of GDDR4 for the first time on the x1950 series will make it a verry atractive mid-range card even afther the DX10 cards, so it should sell well.
I also dont recommend waiting for the G80 since its a hybred SM4 card, shich will perform considerably slower than the r600 in SM4 games like UT2k7 and Crysis, whihc IMO are the most important games to update for.

It all depends on the situation.
Spend your money wisely.
Good luck

be like me. ebay a 10$ 6200, or a x300

those low end cards can play games with decent settings fairly well

High = 1600x1200 and higher

7950GX2 is better value atm
X1900XT for around $300 that can be easily overclocked to or past XTX speeds. The GX2 is hardly about buck for bang quality.

how you can say that about the 7950 you are talking about two video cards faster than 2 7900gt almost like 2 7900gtx for 500$

faster by only 50mhz on the core. Very hard to find additional cooling solutions. You have to do hard-volt-mods. So that's about as far as it goes for overclockability.

IT IS a bad value. The X1900XT at $300... where are the 7900gtx's at $300?

2 7900gt's $250x2 $500

7950gx2 $500

X1900XT $300... yea what's the better value... the 7950gx2 isn't even that much faster.

uuh, ok ... i presume your magic eigthball told you about the g80's performance!?

I understand that I should of at least said "wait for both and see what happens", but anyway its a good educated guess IMO.

ATi is more experienced with the SM4 architecture, since they are already ahead when they developed the r500/Xenon GPU for the Xbox 360. All they had to do is simply perfect it for PCs, add GDDR4, and shrink the die a bit. They were even ahead with GDDR4 compatibility since the r520, but they never implemented it since availability and price was still a problem.

nVidia's g80 is looking more like the successor of the NV30 series than anything else. A hybrid between SM3 and SM4, which I dont think is going to work verry efficient in SM4 games vs the r600 performance wise.

I could be wrong, but either way you should wait until both cards release instead of updating to the G80 as soon as it releases. Afther they anounced that the G80 would support SM4, a lot of people seemed certain about updating to the G80 first and compleately forgot about the r600

X1900GT or x1800GT/XT maybe even the X1900xt and wait for DX10 cards, even then you could just wait for prices to drop on the DX9 cards

Or you could really pull the purse strings and get something like an X850GTO^2, play with it and OC it a lot while you wait for DX10

Depends on how much cash you want to spend and if DX10 coming up means you are looking for a long/short term solution really, as well as upgradeability to SLi/Crossfire and things like that

smith_6079
07-25-2006, 09:31 PM
A DX10 card might not be the only thing you may need to upgrade. DX10 cards are going to be very power hungry since Nvidia and ATI both threw power consumption out of the window for the first generation of DX10. Make sure you have a heavy PSU before considering a DX10 card.

my x1900xtx does oblivion at 1600x1200, maxed out, HDR and 6xAA/16AF. Although the last part sounds fishy, do 6.6cats support HDR+AA/AF (chuck included)?? Anyways be it with or without, it looks absolutely amazing.

i'd ge thte 7950GX2 or wait for the x1950xt2 orw/e its called. just cause DX10 comes out doesnt mean everyone is gonna use it, cause u g2 rmember its gonna be only for Vista, and vista wont be fully operational for like , another year or something. u no how M$ is.

btw, biohead, ur avatar is hilarious.
