OK here is the deal.. i have a Pentium D 930 on an Asus P5W DH with 2 gigs of corair XMS2 ram... SATA2 hard drive... and yet i still have a problem. When i open MS word by going to Start > Programs> MS Office > MS Word, it opens quite quickly. But when i double click a MS word file it take about 1.3 mins for it to open... it just sits there... the hard drive light doesnt come on or anything just sits there... this happend with Excel as well... any ideas?

The only thing I can think to say is that you might try defragmenting.

i just put teh system together 2 days ago... so fresh install...

I find fresh installs are quite often heavily fragmented myself, once you've installed all your programs.

Edit: Though in all fairness, that also depends on how many and what types of programs you install... either way, run 'analyze' on the windows defrag tool (or your defragmenter of choice) and take a look.

i will do that... also... i noticed that it does tno happen directly after reboot... only after it has been booted for over say 20 mins... even if i dont shut down all the way... just a restart.. so i dont think it would be temps.. my MB is at 55C and CPU 46C

well it seems to get worse the longer the computer is on.. so i will monitor my temps.. any idea what the max temp for my CPU and MB should be? if they are getting to hot... then what do i do to get teh MB cooler?

DsM

Whenever I pasted a picture in MS word (this was a while ago), my system would freeze up and I would have to reset the whole system. Now my desktop didn't have great specs, but my laptop which had worse specs than my desktop would never freeze up when I pasted a pic in MS Word. I deleted and re-installed MS Word and the problem went away, but it later returned. Later I re-installed Windows and the problem went away - this time permanently.

I don't know, did you try and re-install word?

I'm thinking now that perhaps you have a memory leak or some form of malware/spyware that you aren't aware of at this point. I suggest running Adaware and/or Kaspersky, as well as taking a look in your task manager to see if any program or process is using more than its fair share of processor time or memory.

Strange macro virus maybe? Is it all word documents, or just one?

DsM

it happened with word and excel documents... also when i would goto internet options in IE and changed anything or not change anything.... and click OK it would take over 2 mins to clear the window and let IE start responding again.. I have put in different RAM and still no avail.. i put back in my RAM and clocked it correctly and raised the voltage after i read that it probably want giving it the 2.1v it needed. still persisted... i now have put in another hard dirve and installed windows on it... and it works... it seems to not have the problem... so i think it might have something to do with the hard drive.

run spybot and lavasoft adaware. For adaware make sure you select "Full System Scan"

why? i have formatted the drive and reinstalled windows like 8 times... the only website i am going to is this one... there is no spyware on the computer except windows...then upgrade to windows 2003 server.

I have no other suggestions because OS tweaking is something that happens over time, not in one sitting.

First thing you'll most likely need to do is get rid of unwanted processes.

well check it out... i reinstalled windows and updated it and put office in there and installed just enough to test and see if it still had the problem on the new hard drive... and it didnt... so i finished loading all my drivers and software and it came back... i think i have found the problem... as soon as i uninstalled my X-Fi drivers and software... boom.. it worked fine... i didnt even have to reboot after teh uninstall to notice the difference... so now the question is: is it the software....or the card? so i just downloaded and installed the basic driver software from creative and am trying that out....

DsM

it was the X-fi dirvers and software that came with the card... problem solved with new drivers and software from creatives website.

Wow that's odd.... your sound card drivers affected your application performance. Would have never figured. Great that you got it fixed.

he already fixed it in case u didnt read recent posts. it was his older X-Fi driver and software that f'd it up.

But why would his X-Fi drivers cause such problems? Has anyone got a reason as to why this might happen?
