View Full Version : Which mouse w/ mat?

So, ive been looking around for a mouse for my computer, and have settled on either the Razer Copperhead, Logitech G5/G7, or the new Cyber Snipa Intelli-Scope (cant find it on sale anywhere in UK though  ). Anyway, what I'd like is a gaming and photoediting mouse with loadsof programmable button for fps games. This kinda rules Logitech mice out cos generally they got less programmable buttons but i like wireless stuff so maybe i should go with G7?
Also, is any mousemat better than other, or doesnt it really matter?

For gaming, get the Logitech G5.
For photoediting, get the Logitech MX 1000
I dont like the razors because they are too flat, which bring your wrist closer to the mouse-pad which isnt good :nono:
The MX 5xx and G series are also a bit flat, but they are not as flat as the Razors and they have a better hand grip IMO.
The MX 1000 is the best in comfort afther you get used to it, since its tall enough to keep my wrist separate from the mouse-pad when my hand is resting over the mouse.
I got a grip on all those mice, so Im talking by experience.
The MX 1000 has a lot of programmable buttons, its wireless, comfortable, but its not as good as the G5 in gaming. Afther getting used to my MX 518 and latter with the G5, when I go back to my MX 1000 it seems pretty inacurate compared to the other two. The MX 1000 is still good for gaming, tho. I had good times owning in U2k4 with it :)
Another problem is that you cant replace the batteries on the MX 1000. You will have to create a habit of leaving your mouse charging when you stop using the PC. If you game a lot and you forget to recharge it, the batteries could run out the second day of gaming. When I was pretty adicted to UT2k4 sometimes I would play for an entire day with short breaks and the fun ended when my mouse ran out. In a good sence it alowed me to take a break anyway :p:
The G5 is verry accurate, you can regulate the weight, you can regulate dpi instantly with + and - buttons, its light without the weight, the plastic cover works well preventing the accumulation of greese from your hands, the cable is sleeved with cloth so it doesnt stick on smooth surfaces like the rubber cables, and the mouse is cheap.
The problems of the G5 is that it lacks buttons, they removed the front & back buttons and just put a back button (both buttons were useful for me in FPS games where you can lean sideways), and the middle button is anoying to click. I need to find a way to mod that middle click, because it is pretty anoying each time you want to put your iron sight or the scope
If you really need a lot of buttons and comfort, get the MX 1000.
If you need pin-point accuracy for your games, get the G5

MX1000 hands down. It's big, it's comfortable, and lasts a long time on the battery. Mine easily goes a week or two without recharging. However, in some games, it has a tendency to lag at lower framerates, but above 50 or so it was super accurate.
For mousepads, generally one with some sort of texture is better, because dirt falls in the cracks and stays off your mouse.

MX1000+Steelpad S&S ftw! The mouse fits like glove to the hand and the mousepad is big and mouse glides very well on it.

Looks like a lot of mixed opinion in mice lol... any mat better suited to mice or doesnt that matter? maybe i should be concentrating on the mat...?
EDIT: Any difference between Mantis and ExactMat? From what i can gather Mantis mat is newer but costs less - does that mean ExactMat is better or something?

ExactMat is softer, but the Mantis is newer and a lot thiner. Both are superb thats why its not about which is better, its all about which one you like more ;)

For reference purposes here is some of my gaming background...
My team was ranked was 1st overall in TWL outta about 40,000 people in COD2 and Im ranked 28th outta 60,000 people in Joint Operation's, I was ranked 3rd overall about a year ago, but stopped playing and dropped positions. Every game that I play I almost allways get 1st place.
With that said it pretty much sums me up as a avid hardcore gamer that is very picky about what hardware and peripheral devices I use.
I've tested about 6 different pads and 6 different mice, ranging from the MX510 to the Razor Copperhead. I program all buttuns on my mouse. I ave prone, jump, bash, crouch, etc. all setup on the forwards, back, page up, page down, scroll down, scroll up and click scroll wheel in all setup on my mouse.
Without getting into all of the details of which was better in what fields I'll just sum it up with this ....
Hands down the MX518 with fresh Teflon feet in conjunction with use of a Black ICEMAT is the Ul†ima†e Se†up.

As long as there's a thread up with a few gamers paying attention here... any more thoughts on the G7? I was in a fun situation where I *had* to spend $100 CDN at a computer store the other day, so I picked up a G7 + some AS5 but havn't had a chance to use it yet, and won't have an opportunity for about another week or so. Just wondering whether any of you have any particular thoughts on that device, as I'll have passed the 7-day return policy the store has before I get a chance to test it.

Dang, so the store just gave you credit to pick up another item. That why I like stores like compusa where you can buy it and then use it and then return it 30 days later and get all cash back.
As for the G7 I really like that mouse too, there is no lag with it when used on the ICEMAT. I really like the LARGE amount of TEFLON that they use on it to keep it sliding smooth.
1 Down side of it is that the Forward and Back buttons are not placed together which makes for lack of internet surfing or prgramability funcionality of the buttons.

I can back my talk up unlike some people that just talk trash. I have the experience, quickness and skills to take him out with my match terms.
I'll beat him there 1vs1 in COD2 or 1vs1 Joint Operations, but chances are slim to non that he will accept the challenge since he will be playing Q4.
I'm going to Quakecon August 2 and if he is there I will challenge him to a 1vs1 in the games that I play and work hard at to be the best there is.
Currently in COD2 my squad is ranked #1 out of all of the people that are signed up in the TWL. And as for Joint Operations under the TOP 50 best players out of 60,000 I held the #3 spot for over 9 months.
I will not beat him in Quake, Painkiller, or UT. Those games he rules in.
In regards to the "Which mouse w/ mat? " thread I was using this information as a reference so inntruzion would know I'm a serious gamer and have a mass amount of knowledge on almost all pc components available on the market.
If I was researching a product I'd rather take an opinion of someone that is a guru on the subject then someone that may not have had as much experience testing products.

I own and use a G5 laser with a func f30 r mouse pad. This is a great setup. I'm a professional wannabe sucker. I try to pick the best components to make myself look a little better. Really, though, it's a great setup. The mousepad helps a lot, too. The pad makes it much more accurate than when I was just using my desk as a surface.
CONS with G5:
- Hard for me to accurately move 1dot left, 1dot right, 1dot up, or 1dot down because at 2000dpi the mouse moves with such extreme profusion.
- Doesn't grant me #1 status in the gaming community (someone the other day whispered in their mic when I died "you're awful." Like I'm not suppose to hear that?
- One thumb button is missing.
Gamers all have their own opinions on hardware. Not to put SHiZNiLTi down or anything, but what does the #2 player and #1 player use as their mouse and pad of choice. I'm sure it varies. Really, just pick a good one, get used to it, and own away.

Yeah joking. Mouse didn't help me kill any more people, but it helps me aim a little better with more precision. Just got to get quicker at it.
CS: Source is easy head shooting. CS 1.6 is lot harder. Practice 1.6 then you will own in Source. Eh, I think I'm going to go place Source now.

One_Hertz: From what I heard they fixed that problem with newer drivers.
Inntruzion: All of the mice stated here are basically the top of the line, it all comes down to personal choice and feel, try and pick them up at a store and return the ones you don't like as much? The same goes for the mats, everyone has already mentioned the top of the line ones.
SHiZNiLTi: It is august 3rd, got the screens?

I 100% agree with that. Buy like 2 different pad's and 2 different mice at a store that does not have a restocking fee for open items. That gives you the chance to personally test them out and then return what you don't want with out paying anything.
Unfortunatly I'm unable to go to Quakecon because the yearly audit for my Network Administrative job is going on during this weekend. I would only have a few days to enjoy quakecon if I did decide to go, but i would miss the best part Friday, Saterday, and Sunday. It's $420 to get there via air too :( Although I just dropped my friend off at the bus station last night and it was only $190.
He Brought his camera so I'll post up some pick of quakcon when he gets back.

I use a MX-518, which I absolutely love...I set the medium sensativity to my usual in games, and use the buttons for sniping and such. My keyboard is a generic, beige microsoft one ($10) served me great...and my mousepad is a nice felt little thing with a wrist rest. "pr0 gaming" < risk of carpal tunnel.

That's what I'm using too. Without doubt the best mouse I've ever played with. If this one packs up, I'll buy another one. Simple as. It took me ages to find one I was comfortable to settle down with. I was using a generic one before that... and tbh, it was hard to change (it's amazing how used to a mouse you get!) - but now I wouldn't change for the world.
My m8 uses the Logitech G5 link (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2464,CONTENTID=10715) and it's f'kin awful. He can use it fine. But I tried it when I was after a new mouse and just no. It gets a little "too" technical when there's weights with a mouse :slapass:

One thousand, five hundred and nine hours playing a game. That's roughly 38 weeks of work at a 9-5 job. Get a part-time and that's a good start on your college tuition. That's time to read a book or fifty. That's time to go outside.

LOL, its actually 2059 hrs total for that game, there is JOTR and JOE, JOE is the expansion for Joint Operations Typhon Rising(JOTR), but xifre treated it as a seperate game.
I actually didn't play any online games during college. All that time gaming was done after I graduated with an associate's degree in Computer Networking Information Technology. I then landed a good Network Administrative job for a large global logistics company and the hardcore gaming began once I got into overclocking.
I remember being soo addicted to Joint Operations that after I my 8 hour work day I would put in another 8 hours of gaming. I would average about 40 hours a week of gaming and only sleep about 3-4 horus per day.
With all this said I still managed to have somewhat of a social life, on the weekend I would have people over to go swimming and BBQ and then at night I would go out to the bars/parties with friends that I would play online with that lived or worked with me at the time. I do admit though even after we get done at the bar I would come back to a drunk session of gaming to end the night - well that is if there wasn't a girl with me at the time :D
