1mb cache chips are discontinued ;)

Except for the FX-62 :)

Glad I got my 3700+ for the secondary before they are all gone!

512Kb is enough cache for an AMD64 cpu.

the difference between 512Kb <-> 1MB is very small imo.

Smart move from AMD.

Eh, depening on what you are doing with it.

Word/Excel/MS Paint use no, there no performace gain.

Any thing 3D, numbers, Video, Sound. The performace gains are quite large.

Agreed. AMD architecture doesn't rely very heavily on cache, unlike intel - not sure about conroe but seeing that one is going to have what, 4MB cache? I'm guessing that it will still rely on cache more. I went from an Athlon 64 s754 3000+ with 512k of cache to an intel pentium-M 2GHz (which I was told is about equal with a P4 3GHz or so) with 2MB of cache - I personally think the AMD peformed better. Back to AMD for me now with my 3700+ with 1MB cache. Reason for buying that chip wasn't the cache but to OC it :D

If you get too small like 128k that some of the sempron CPU's have then yeah there is definitely a difference but get an AMD chip with 512k and any more than that (right now) doesn't mean a huge performance gain.

I might be wrong, but that is the way it appears to me. I've been known to be wrong before tho ;)

I've done tests, and I don't see any difference between a 3800+ and a 4000+ DC

Both are running 2 ghz, 3800+ with 512k cache, and 4000+ 1024k cache.

Results are very minimal. In 3d they are very minimal aswell.

very smart move by AMD. I'd rather pay 280 dollars for a 5000+ @ 2.6ghz, than more for a chip with 1 mb of cache.

cache is over rated with AMD.

All none Opty/FX 1Mb L2 Procs will be no longer be made. Simply because there is no real reason for it.

Not because there is no need but rather because they take significantly more fab space while yielding minimal performance improvements (and in many apps no improvement at all). AMD is still fab-space limited, whatever everyone says, and this new price war with Intel will increase demand for X2s dramatically.

Yeah, I kinda wish I would have gotten one without the 1mb cache. But hey, Nice to have discontinued stuff I guess.
