I will be experimenting with the 805 this weekend, as soon as I get my hands on an eVGA 7800 GT (only part I need, everything else is coming today at 4:00pm via Fedex). I know this chip will hit 4Ghz with the right settings, but I will need better cooling than stock so I will using a Koolance kit. Their CPU blocks have a screw for CPU's with out the IHS. Does anyone know if the IHS on the 805 is epoxied on like some other intels? I've never popped the lid on an Intel before, is it just like an AMD 64? Any pics of the 805 or any other Pentium D with a popped lid. Sorry for asking but its late and I don't hang out here in the Intel section.

no don't do it. without the IHS you can't even mount the CPU to LGA775 bracket cuz they use the height of IHS to press CPU down so it can contact properly with the pins on the motherboard
The IHS is glued to the cpu with thermal epoxy and the cores of your cpu will probably come of with the IHS. So don't do it. Just lap the IHS and you should be fine.

The LGA 775 motherboard socket requires IHS to press CPU down.
Not a good idea to remove IHS if you ask me.
It is, however, a different story for AMD and other non-LGA775 CPUs.

But... by all means DO lap the 805. The top of mine was WAY out. I lapped it down till I had bare copper showing for the heatsink to mount to.

It might be worth trying without lapping if you aren't pushing for world records. I was getting 4.0 G (stock cooler, vcore in the 1.6 range) gaming stable (aka running BF2 and Oblivion for hours with no issues), and my temps were in the mid-60's loaded. Above that I started to trip the thermal limits.
Now I'm on water (Apogee, BIGT 240, DD D-5) and core temp maxes at ~40 doing dual super-pi at 4.2G! Idle hangs out at 27. Sweet.
No lapping, just a good cleaning job and the AS ceramique that came with the Apogee. I did reseat the NB/SB coolers with AS-5, which helped my MB temps.

For some reason the standard 805 IHS are made quite uneven, just some light sanding should show gains through better contact with the HSF. It invalidates the warranty though

Thanks, I wasn't sure about the 775 because the IHS is different than a flat AMD 64 IHS and i've heard that Intels are expoxied on. Just got it today and i'm unpacking the stuff now.

A little off topic, but I have some Corsair DDR2-800 PC 6400 on hand. Can this be used with an Asus P5N32-SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI Intel Edition? I haven't looked at everything yet so I thought I'd just ask.

vcore 1.6 range? temps mid-60c?
And I am afraid to go to 1.55 vcore and nothing over 60c.
Maybe I can push her further! I will try, especially since I just reseated nb and sb with ac5 and put new fan in scythe mine.
