After playing with my X6800, I decided to change my benching cpu, and got my hands on a Kentsfield 2.66GHz, as everybody know here, it's a quadcore (two conroe E6700 dies on the same package), so 2.66 / 8M /1066 to use the usual intel notation.

The only working (and with overclocking abilities) motherboard I have for now is an unmodded Intel D975XBX rev304, with the last official bios. Kenstfield is not officially supported (scheduled for Q1'07, so nothing weird here...) and the fsb crashes above ~270-275MHz. Fortunately my sample is fully unlocked, from 6x to ... i've tried 16x for now, and it works well, it seems that it's like the X6800 on this point.

Nice results!

The FSB crashes sounds a little unfortunate though. Didn't Viktor or Andre run a Kentsfield on a P5B board?

Tyrou
07-15-2006, 02:48 AM
thanks :)

I'm sure it's a motherboard problem, Andre runs the same cpu over 304MHz fsb on his P5B, I have to repalce my badaxe by something else, or try to find a better bios :D

nice ... 3dmark06 cpu score is yummy :D

tried with just 2x1GB modules to see if you can go higher on fsb ?

I tried with only two sticks, on different slots, even tried different brands, no way to change that :(

I'll try to find another m/b

top result! how many vcore you need for the 4455mhz?

Tyrou
07-15-2006, 03:59 AM
1.6v set in bios, 1.54v measured on the mosfet, I hope my modded board still works, so that i can try with a better vcore :D

Just incredible cpu power , incredible .
Now get a strong board to make the perfect pair with that 6700 kenstfield and let it rip 2700/275 is very low :P

Amazing scores! Running high multi and "low" FSB doesn't mean lower performance, so it's a nice way to get high clocks. Core speed is the important thing, the Core 2 Duo architecture isn't very bandwidht dependent.

ok, it may not be as bandwidth hungry as the netbursts were, but being stuck at a so low fsb is quite frustrating, I've turned the cascade off, and i'll try me other board (modded), maybe it will be slightly better.

running at 10*430 would be so nice :slobber:

fully unlocked, no idea cause it's an early sample or if it will be an Xtreme Edition when it hits the retail market.

bad news, my modded board is still dead, I'm stuck with the unmodded one for the weekend :(

Sweet :woot:
Is there any advantage of 4GB ram? Did you tryed to bench with 2GB?
Any possibility to OC this beast similar to dual core E6700?

07-16-2006, 11:38 AM
What whas that???? A Kentfield?

Did you tke off the IHS? It says "Superman" on the core?

juice off-- Vero powerful chip, the same question: ¿Any advantaje of 4 GB? At least in Cinebench.

wat0n
07-16-2006, 11:52 AM
that's amazing :o

guess conroe is part of the past now :D

Tyrou
07-16-2006, 12:18 PM
pi numbers are ~ the same as those you'd see on a same frequency conroe, superpi is NOT multithreaded, so it only uses one of the cores :(

with no effort, nor an optimization, I'm in the mid 11s, that's not exceptionnal, but regarding what else this cpu can do, I'm not disappointed...

Here it's 38c (approx 100F), so I can't bench a lot, my garage doesn't have air conditionning, and the cascade doesn't seem to love those sky-high temps.

no idea on the influence of 4GB in benches, I just tried to see if 4 sticks lower the overclocking, but no problem, so I let them in the slots.

next target : 13K 3D06 and 2300 in cinebench, both should be quite easy :D

Nice results, Tyrou. Kentsfield is looking good. Outside temperature where I live is also 38-39C. Not good benching weather. Even with A/C on, it's still warm in my house.

So a revsion 304 Bad Axe board runs kentsfield fully overclocked?

I see the FSB issue is a bit of a pain, maybe some mods will sort that out for you?

It's encouraging to see this as my Kentsfield is on it's way and I was going to wait for the MSI powered up to land - this looks like it could help me in the short term.

Would you say this board is good for running kentsfield overclocked 24/7? Any specific issues regards heat?

Cheers

Mav

Tyrou
07-17-2006, 12:22 PM
this motherboard with the current bios revision doesn't make kentsfield work properly, only half of the L2 cache is seen by the bios, and fsb limit around 275 is a mess, but i don't worry, i'm sure they'll fix this with a new bios :)

AndreYang
07-17-2006, 01:06 PM
You need to change your mobo. Intel D975XBX is hard to oc with kentsfield.

maverik-sg1
07-17-2006, 01:14 PM
So go for the Asus P5W DH (fully modded)? or the 965 Asus?

Maybe the best boards available until the powered up edition from MSI is released retail.

Cheers

MAv

I think Andre likes the P5B for Kentsfield. ;) I'm curious why you think MSI will be the best. Because of coolaler's results? He's gotten great results with his MSI board. But that's just one person.

Tyrou
07-17-2006, 02:51 PM
I need a 975X based board, I'll probably try the P5WDH ou the DFI (O'd like to try the MSI, but it's harder to get :D)

You're totally right Andre, overclocking with a motherboard that do not allow a fsb higher than 275 and which has max actual vcore of 1.54V is a PITA ...

theteamaqua
07-17-2006, 08:35 PM
sweeet tyro

is 975XBX > any other boards in OCing (with mods and everything )

nice stuff, i'd be really interested to, really at any speed, even stock on a stock sink(i know, blasphemy :p ), see the difference between a single pi run on one core, and running 4 copies at the same time to try and see what kinda bus/bandwidth limitations the chip has. might have none, i'm thinking might be quite bad. say a 1mb pie run on all cores compared to just once instance, then again with 8mb. tbh i'm not entirely sure what kind of slowdown there is now on a ath 64 rig, seem to remember it not being to bad.

got a 3800+ x2, and a temp 3Ghz pressler in my setup that is conroe ready(cept the cpu). looking less at the numbers and more at the % drop in performance(hence any speed), of the different platforms. whats the follow up to kentsfield, its supposed to be native quad core, will that chip have the new fsb/bus system(CSI, whats that stand for anyone?).

With a better mobo and higher FSB, you could probably take that SP1M WR.

Glad to see you back in action! Keep the pressure on until it blows.

he'll need about 600-700mhz to get that SP1M WR

Is it possible to disable 3 cores and run a single core with 8MB cache?

Or it can only use 4MB cache from its own die?

Have you updated to the new 1334 BIOS on the Bad Axe yet? I might be optomistic but that might cure the fsb wall on the Bad Axe. Supposedly alot of Conroe owners have reported better OC's with the new BIOS. I haven't updated mine yet but I will this afternoon when I get home. If it does help the OC it might help with this kentsfield. Just a thought.

:)

no it's not possible because the core has 2 dies. it's like 2 E6700 side by side

BlackX
07-25-2006, 07:26 AM
Thanks man, so with the conroe is not possible to disable a core and run with one and the 4mb cache...right?

Conroe has one die with 2 cores which shares 4mb of cache. So its possible and Coolaler already did this. So one core with 4 mb = X6800@5501MHz ;) and I think its not the top

Although Kentsfield in @ XS for a while, I still cant believe the power of 4 COREs @ 4Ghz+ HOLY ***********

now for the FSB problem - I dont see any other option than a 965 based mobo, as stated in other threads, 975X and high FSB is a real PITA ,
thenlast chance for a 975X is to watercool it ...

Wish you GOOD LUCk Tyrou :toast:
