In New Yory city a 4 story builiding collasped after a doctor attempted suicide . They think is was a natural gas explosion. It collapsed the entire building, Very sad, but the explosive power is amazing.

Natural gas contains 1050 Btu in 1 cubic foot (vapor)91,500 Btu gallon (liquid)

Propane contains 2500 Btu in 1 cubic foot (vapor)

As you can see Propane contains more than TWICE the engery.

Please don't turn this into a rant thread, I just want everyone to be aware of the :caution: chemical energy:caution: in a tank of propane or other flamable gases. They are used every day Safely but be sure your aware of the pressure and have the proper equiptment. Work Safe

That's what happened when someone shot a propane tank.

Good info on the energy of propane, thanks walt. :)

If you ever have doubts of the power of a propane tank, just braze a cylinder valve to a 10 foot piece of 1/4" pipe and then vent it w/ a candle near the exit, when I was attempting to create a propane powered pulse jet we performed this to test the gas flow that a propane cylinder and valve would be capable of. To put a long story short we had a decent 10-12 foot flame and the heat could be felt up to twenty feet away. Propane vaporized in air can be very explosive when the correct fuel/air mixture is achieved. Thankfully this range is very low.

I watched this but I cant see where the guy went. I think I'll get certified and use less explosive gases in my system.

I think most people are aware of the hazards of propane, acetylene etc. But good of you to point it out anyway, still playing safety police

:woot: do the safety dance!

It definately looks rather crudely cut, so its not like he got blow to smithereens.

An explosion of that size isn't enough to vaporize a body, nor throw someone far enough away that he'd fly out of the frame anyway.

But tear off an arm or kill you from the concussion-dammage? sure. Thats generally why you want to be real careful with explosives, preasurized flamable gases included...

Sorta still on topic:
Which one burns hotter? Mapp or propane? And how much energy does mapp gas have(vapour in btu)?

Ah that's what I thought, I was burning pure mapp without oxygen yesterday and saw soot everywhere.

Thanks for the info.

nomather what gas you use it will only produce as much energy as oxygene you have.... some gasses explode (acetylene) some burn really quick (propane) - thats the bigger danger

when i charged my potato cannon with mapp it shot them for over 200 meters, propane was good for about 60-100. I never had the courage to fill it with acetylene and oxygene :D

I don't blame you, I don't think I would either (especially after my propane potato cannon exploded in my face)].

XD man I gotta make a mini oxy mapp welded steel potato cannon, that'll blow some serious stuff haha, we used to play potato skipping on water, so fun

friend made a potato Howitzer, but then again he is a very skilled engineer, the boom it would make was fierce and that potato was gone, with binoculars you could barely see the splash, and ya, he used oxi accetle (His prototype blew up though)

So exercise extreme caution and safety practises, you are making a cannon, so treat it like it is, a weapon.
