View Full Version : Really easy VGpu/Vddr mod 6800GS / 7800GT (No soldering!)
Works with 6800GS and 7800GT. If someone who doesn't like to solder want to do voltage mods, here is your chance.
Vgpu is easy to do with conductive paint. I have to discover more voltages later. It's +32 Celsius out there, so I'm not going to be indoors :)
Here is how you do it. Yellow increase core voltage 0.05V and red 0.1V. So if original 3D voltage is 1.4V (6800GS) it will be 1.4 / 1.45 / 1.5 / 1.55V

Memory mod might be old news. Just stick wires in these holes and you are ready.

This is great, since I'm a little shakey with the soldering iron :(. One question, if I do this with the 1.5v bios mod, does that add up to 1.6v?

So the 6800GS and 7800GT have the same pcb layout?
Awesome guide. I too would like to know about using this with the 1.5v bios mod.
Also, could you elaborate a little on how to do the mem vmod? thanks

i'm guessing if you use the softmod (1.5v) then you'll have the options of 1.5, 1.55, 1.6, 1.65 V

Do these increase voltages in 3D mode only, or 2D mode as well?

I'll do this in a week or two, when I flush out my water cooling system. The cpu block has been blocked up with god knows what, and the water is murky...
For even more laziness for the vddr, you can do this:

Pencil resistor marked down to 590 ohms, yielding 2.2 volts (I think.)

I've already done the pencil mod on the mem, but I'm looking to add more volts to the gpu. I've done the 1.5v bios gpu mod, but I think I'll use this mod to raise it to 1.6v.

Somebody with 7800GT must try this. I haven't heard that 1.5V bios mod would work with 6800GS.
So the 6800GS and 7800GT have the same pcb layout?

The pcb is same. Only different core in these cards.
Mem mod is simple: just stick wires in the holes marked (TP 504 and TP509) and thats it. Of course you can glue them on. Check that there are no bended wires and wires doesn't touch anything else on the other side of the pcb.

Just to make sure I understand before I do this to my $300 card:
When you say stick wires in the holes, do I
A. Take a single wire and stick an end in each hole, thus connecting the two holes
or
B. Take two wires and stick one in each hole?
I'm thinking it's A, but better to ask then have a dead card.;)

:slobber: It's good that you asked this before doing it.
Here is how you do it properly. Connect variable resistor (20K ohm or 10K ohm) with wires in these two holes. Tune down to increase voltage. Default voltage is 2.0V and with 10K ohm vr = 2.2V

can you upload the pictures again pls, they dont work.
my 7800gt is at 1.5v via bios mod, but i cant be sure that it worked, so i need the measuring points to check. if it is at 1.5 then i guess it would only really be wise to goto 1.55v

No... I turned on the pc to find it artifacting heavily. I'll RMA it eventually...

Right before I did it. I fired up 3dmark06 to record my score, and it artifacted heavily. It's been a while since I've played any games. It's the summer, so I don't have the stress of school or anything. A few days later it died pretty much completely. I don't plan on keeping my replacement, though. I'll probably sell it, get a PCI card and wait for g80 or r600.

ok i did the +.05 mod so now im at ~1.58v in 3d and it seems like my card isnt locking up the pc like it was doing before at 1.53v and anything over 430mhz core (40 delta).
am i safe at 1.58??
also whats the default voltage for the memory? it does 1250 easily at its default.

How exactly do you measure with multimeter.

put one lead to the case (just jam it in a gap around the hdd area) and the other to the read point as shown earlier in the thread.
do not slip whilst measuring as you could damage your card as the pc has to be turned on and runing something like ati tool or 3dmark.
New pics.

You can't get higher voltage with this method, because Intersil 6563 uses AMD hammer VID codes. So all five pins (VID 0-4 pins) connected to ground give 1.55V
If someone could disconnect pin 3 from ground (DACSEL/VID5), ISL6563 would read VID codes from VRM9.0 table. So maximum voltage would be 1.85V

@SF3D, you dont need to do that for the 1.5 bios + 0.05 mod. i did the bios and the 0.05 mod as show earlier in the thread and acheived the desired results, 1.53 with bios mod and 1.58 with the vmod.
your new method is in fact harder to do, previously for each, all u need to do is drop a blob of solder between each set of pads. (conductive paint is too messy)

Hello everybody. I've tried to do the vmod in my XFX 6800GS XXX, but it doesn't work. I've tried 5 times with conductive paint (with silver), but nothing results :stick: . Always remains at 1,4V in 3D mode.
Can anyone explain me how to make good contact between the two points?.
Thanks.

What exactly did you change? I've tried connecting the traces to boost my 6800gs vGPU by ~0.15v but I'm not seeing any increase in OC headroom or load temperature.

Strange, I've connected the two sets of pads to boost voltage by 0.15v - it does nothing for me. vGPU under load is ~1.40V steady. I'll try connecting to the ground that SF3D suggested.
edit: I connected the pin to ground that would increase voltage by 0.1v, and I get no change :P
edit2: as far as I can tell the simple vgpu +0.1v and +0.05v mods don't work on my pcie 6800gs, there's a complete circuit but no change in 2d or 3d voltage (steady 1.4v either way). I'll try the 10k ohm trimmer mod once I've had some practice soldering very small things :P

I have an original 7800GT with exactly the same PCB as shown on the pictures before..i just made the pencil mod on vGPU and i don't see any change.

He founded how to increase the voltage, but there is no explaination...are we oblige to use this with nibitor? It would be strange,i thought we didn't need that...i hope someone could help me...Thank's a lot!!

Hi Zygomatikdan!
You can't do this mod with pencil. You have to connect points totally with silver paint or something similar.

ive done both mods here now and top out at 1.58v, i was at that before with the bios mod (which is still active) as well as the 0.05v mod.

I think the resistor in mod point is not contacting pcb properly. You need to resolder it.
