Sure we all like to sleep in comfort, but how many of you would be willing to pay $1.5 million for a one-of-a-kind bed? Anyone? Anyone at all? Well Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars is hoping that someone will shell out big bucks for that floating slab you see pictured above, as he's apparently spent six years of his life in the noble pursuit of a sleeping surface that can be suspended entirely by magnets. Do you actually get a better night's sleep on a bed that's only attached to a solid surface with a few narrow tethers? Probably not, but it seems that anyone spending a million bucks on something like this is more concerned with impressing potential overnight guests than waking up refreshed in the morning, anyway. If you just have to get your hands on one of these, but you'd prefer to remain below the seven-figure price point, Ruijssenaars was also showing off a smaller version at the Miljonaire fair in Kortrijk that goes for a more affordable $146,000; at 1/5th the size of the regular model, it's much too small for you to sleep in, but it would sure make a great perch for your already-spoiled dog or cat.

Looks pretty nice if your a robot or architect who never sleeps. And what about the whole magnetism brain damage thing ;)

Wouldn't it be like constantly getting an MRI?

Well, and MRI uses pulses while those are earth magnets(i think).

That is awesome. Just a snapshot of the future, methinks.

Mmm, if I was rich, I'd make like a floating floor outta those....

With the strength of those magnets, you wouldn't be able to have a computer. Neither would your neighbor. :D

something I was concerned about right when I read this as well.
If it's the case - founder should be shoot :slap: If not founder is genius....this is future but wonder if it's really comfortable

i dont see the point in this really, looking from a practical perspective. only benefit is being able to ... eh, put stuff under your bed? :/ not to mention the constant power that the magnets require.

The bed can carry magneetgebruik 900 kilos. Four thin staalkabeltjes keep the object inert at his place and form the only contact with the ground.
they use four wires to hold it in place.. possibly up too..

last time i worked at the national hi magnetics lab they still had no evdience of any kind of damage from magnets, and those guys working there get hit wiht 20 tesla all the time (maximum mri is aroudn 11?) id be surprised if this bed was even at 1, and even so youd be near the top of the field you be at less than 1 and our earth is at .05? so id say in order to even remotly say this bed casued anything youd have to spend yoru life on it. besides lower magnetic feilds improve health accoridng to some nuts out there

not true, magnetic feilds can coexsist jsut fine, you cna put 1 tesla magnets all around your hdd case withe no problem. you coudl easioly put your comptuer in the same room with this bed with no problems

they use four wires to hold it in place.. possibly up too..Duh.

Look at the picture in the 1st post. The wires are attached into the floor, not ceiling.

I was involved in a little incident about 3 years back which involved computers and the law. I was given a choice to either get charged or have my harddrive distroyed.
Obviously i choice to have my harddrive distroyed, and they used powerful magnets to erase all data from my harddrive, and i was unable to use the harddrive afterwards. So i pretty sure magnets do affect harddrives.

Was the hdd destroyed by putting it directly between two poles, as iirc field strength is strongest there? If so, just don't put the pc under the bed... duh ;)

Hmm. So what if you flip the bed in the middle of the night? *SPLAT* I think I'll stick to my regular bed, personally.

Lol I just had a flash! :toast:

Someone I don't like, switch magnets on one side off and the other up as high as possible and when it detects it's flipped put them both on max :stick:

magnets indeed do affect hard drives. that tis infact how they work, but for an example when we had to destroy all the hdd's at the bank we bought a 7000 dollar electro magnet to do the job. if you got a vhs within6 feet of this bad boy, itd be completely erased, 20 feet would just make it all messed up looking. we left each of the 80 hard drives on teh magnet for 30 seconds, 30 percent of the hdd's still booted, and the majority of them you could still read some data from. this was a 7 tesla magnet. thas enuff power to pick up a car, the bed would be no were near that strong, nor in direct contact with the hdd. the idea is that magnetic feilds can coexsist. not to mention ther are tow quite beefy magnets in yoru hdd that jsut swng hte head around, not write anything. ive held up coupla pair of pliers nad wrnechs iwht those too. so did this guy

The NIB magnets in HDs are powerful, but, they have a very small field, I had to put something within .7 inch oh the magnet for it to even start to get pulled towards it

Hmm. I figured out a fix to the flipping and squashing problem. Make the bed as a magnet sandwich:
