mmm I wouldn't say no competitors but I know coolaler does have his hands on AMD's new quad-core chip and he did post some benches with it but no 3dmark cpu benches if I remember correctly, the post was on his forums and in a language i didn't recognize :( ill find the link in a sec

EDIT: here ya go mate's link to coolaler's Socket F quad core opteron : http://forum.coolaler.com/showthread.php?t=129679&page=1&pp=10

When will this be available?

When will 4x4 be available?

Will this make 4x4 look crude by comparison?

What will be cheaper?

Thanks.

What sort of temps does this run at?

Also - will it overclock on current boards?

Any mods recommended for say an ASUS PW5?

There is every possibility I will acquire one of these if it clocks okay under R507 mach with chilly head.

Cheers

Core 2 Xtreme should never be much more than $1300 online
The Kentsfield will not cost more than Core 2 based on historic data, Intel have never made desktop chips more expensive than $1000 at disti cost.

"The E6700, which is a 2.67GHz chip with 4MB of cache and a 1066 front side bus will cost $529 while the E6600, a 2.40GHz version will cost $315. The other two members of the Intel Cointreau family have 2MB of cache apiece, with the E6400 (2.13GHz) costing $240, while the E6300 (1.86GHz) will cost $210." Disti costs as reported by the inquirer - you should never pay much more than 20% above that.

They've got to push past $1,000 at some point. You're essentially getting a Xeon 5130ish.

Well, first Kentsfields that were offered were over $2000, I believe AndreYang mentioned a price of $1650-1750 later on.

You could say they're way overpriced, but if you want something exclusive...

Thats because these are ES chips that are not for resale, selling/buying them is not technically legit. Of course when they are not launched and very rare they cost a lot more.

Initial samples of Kentsfield are 2.4ghz - a pair of 2.4 Core 2 Duo is only $630 - kentsfield has only one package and would therefore cost less to make than a pair of Core 2 Duo.....why should it end up costing over $1000?

Yes of course that's the reason ;) But wether or not Kentsfield will be sub $1000 on launch is not decided yet, I think. When Intel sees that a lot of people are willing to shell out the cash for let's say a X6800, they'll probably increase their price next time. When they see that hardly anyone want s to pay $1000, they'll probably not. It's a little bit the same as with high end video. Few years ago nobody would've thought many would be buying +$500 graphic cards :)
