save the internet! (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/07/02/ntia_icann_consultation/)
I know, this was just on digg, but it needed to be reposted here.

The US government is asking for comments on how the internet should be run, and anyone is allowed to comment - but you'll need to be quick.

lol good one ;)

Nice to see we get a word in this. I say, even if the US were the ones that made the Internet, I don't believe they should be the one who controls it. It should be an internationnal thing :toast:

By the way, are we running out of IP addresses?

Yes! This is where IPv6 comes in. Its been in devlepment since late 90's and yet to be implimented. (Talk about a PITA)

I sent a short and sweet email as well.

Imagine if it doesn't get implimented fast enough and we do run out of IP addresses. Next time you want to connect to the Internet, your request would be put onto a queue. What a nightmare! :p:

Well the problem is converting from IPv4 to IPv6. It is a huge PITA and no one wants to do it. Not to mention, alot of people are upgrading networks going to voice etc and there still are not many IPv6 devices out there. IPv6 is going to be like y2k all over again ;)

I wouldn't worry too much about running out of IP's... worse case scenario is that your ISP calls you up and tells you that they've begun to offer two types of internet packages - one that disallows you the ability to act as a server and one that does. The one that does would continue to use a regular IP address, while the one that doesn't let you act as a server would simply involve using a NAT-overloading device that makes you and your neighbors use the same IP address (which is totally irrelevant if you're not hosting stuff and ports are being forwarded correctly). Clearly it's not the greatest solution, but I don't think the majority of Internet users would ever notice/care.

Serra,
Alot of ISP's are already starting to do this. Verizon is one of them.
