iv got a friend that has an Intel Celeron 2.4GHz. its a socket 478, 128kb cache, 400mhz FSB and i think its a Northwood. i just wanted to know what his avg temps for that chip should be. also, is there a website i can go to check out the properties of the chip like max temps and other detaild info of the chip as well? thanks.

I suggest max threshold of 57-60C. They can hold a bit more heat than a barton, but only a bit.

But considering their small heatdump, maybe 47-52C under stress?

My P4 2.8 northwood went 39C overclocked to 3.3GHz, and with a 2100RPM 80MM fan lol

ok thanks. he says he gets up to 51 or so while he games so i thought that was getting a bit high. its a retail chip so he is using the stock fan and stock thermal paste. would it help if he were to put some Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease and remove the stock pad?

Yes, I think some AS5 and a aftermarket heatsink would do wonders for him. If he is really worried about proper cooling than I suggest he replace those 2 things.

no he doesnt want to change the fan. he just wants to change the thermal grease to arctic silver 5 if thats going to help. i know it makes a few degree difference on an amd chip (like mine) but i dont know what it would do on a celeron.

Well has he considered lapping the stock heatsink?

Should make a few degrees of difference, but make sure to clean off the old thermal pad well

he doesnt know how to do that. he just was wondering about the thermal grease since he doesnt want to buy a fan for it. doesnt want to spend too much on it so he only wants to spend enough for some good thermal grease. and if he is, im the one thats going to install it for him since he doesnt know how to do it. he had the system built for him.

My 2.8C @ 3.1Ghz is averaging 26-32C Idle and 50-55C load. Shouldn't be much different for a Celeron.

There you have it then. 51C in games isn't all that bad.

ok thanks for the reply. ill let him know. he will most likely want to get the paste anyways. he said if its going to atleast help him a few degress then he will get it. it doesnt cost too much so he will go for it.
