posted this here too cause I am not really sure it belonged in the intel forum =x
Hey guys its been about a year since I have trolled these forums for your guys knowledge on current technology and overclocking.
I have recently picked up a D975XbX revision 304
I am waiting for conroe the 6600 with the 4 megs l2 cache but I picked up a D930 for now (fry's had a good price), and pqi TURBO 2GB DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)
My question to you guys is, Should I get a water cooling setup I hear some of the preboxed sets (danger den, swiftech) are pretty decent nowadays for the price ( I don't really trust constructing one myself). or just get a nice air cooler for now and upgrade to water when the conroe comes out?
I know the zalman 9500 LEd and thermaltake big typhoon, as well as the thermalright xp120 are all supposed to be good air cooler capable of pushing my current chip into the ~4ghz range. I am worried about clearance on the d975XBX -304 board, do all of those coolers fit ( zalmans page doesn't mention d975X) or will I have to mod my board etc ( prefer not to mod anything) just attach and go.
I would greatly aprpeciate any feedback

What kit are you considering?
Maybe you could try with the Swiftech APex Ultra Kit+ any Waterblocks you may want to add (or changing the Apogee for anoother CPU Block or changing reservoir for Fillport).
A kit like that will perform very well for overclocking.

thanks for the advise guys I was leaning towards that big Typhoon mostly cause it doesn't cost and arm and a leg and the cooling seems to be very affective on it.
the 2nd option I was looking at was the 120MM Swiftech kit or the big water kit with the bigger pump, and the larger radiator, cause of the price point and with the new design it seems like a viable kit now compared to the original cheap small setup.
the TT120 looked promising too but from what I have been reading in here its near impossible to get in these next few months, unless your willing to order from another country lawlol.
thanks again

more input would be greatly appreciated

I have the Swiftech Apex Ultra kit, still using the Apogee block, and added the MCW60B for my GPU. I did not get the Plus kit since the chipset block would not work with my DFI NF4 board. It's quite a good kit, although like yourself, I did not trust putting a kit together myself. Plus, it was nice just to open up a box and have everything there. It all fit nicely, I didn't have to run out to the hardware store to get more parts etc. And in the end I wanted a clean installation that was quiet, more so than aboslute butt kicking performance.
Prior to this Swiftech kit I used the Corsair COOL kit, and I found this Swiftech one better with the bigger rad and stronger pump. Quality of all the parts in both the Corsair (a rebadged Swiftech to begin with) and the Swiftech Apex Ultra were very good. I'm sure you can hand pick better parts and get better performance though. I wanted to keep things simple and clean so I got a kit. Another thing I did change was I bought 2 Yate Loon 120mm fans which are known to be nice and quiet fans. So far, I'm very happy with it and don't regret it. You will probably get better performance with a Storm block, but I just used the Apogee on mine and may decide to change it later.

TT BT is a good choice, i've installed many of them, just make sure to tighten the screws really good, otherwise you will need to retighen them in a month or so. Keep an eye on temps for a while would be my advice.
