3dmark05 is very good for benching a modern card (like a 7900gtx). But it does take a long time to run. It becomes tedious when you are trying to determine your best clocks and memory timings.

Is there an alternative small, modern benching app that can give a ballpark score after a short (eg 1 minute) run? Such a tool would make testing of clock speeds and timings much easier.

For me i tend to use ATI tool as my initial artifact tester, after than 3dmark05 and 06 then some gamer i run usually at 1280x1024 and depends on how fast the game runs on my system as ive noticed it harder to spot artifacts on a very low FSP, like for example 4xAA and 16x Aniso at 1600x1200 with 3dmark05 proxy con game test i usually take note at the starting part where the soliders are in that elevator

Atitool artifact tester doesn't really work for the last two beta.
Just lauch 3DM03 test2, 3DM05 test 1 & 3, and 3DM06 test 3 fot quick seeking of artefact.

Ya. I'm using the Beta 14 and artifact scanner/3D view crashes the system immediately while 3DMark can run smoothly w/o artifacts.
