Hey guys,i need something to overclock my processor on windows platform.Because I cant reach bios,İ cant change cpu or mem . settings. My computer is a laptop, and compaq locked the bios I thınk.
I trıed Clockgen a week ago,but I cant select pll chips, and I cant overclock my laptop.I am using xp and its very slow,my friend sold me this notebook,3 months ago and he said it have 600 mhz microprocessor. But,i installed windows xp and saw its 450 mhz.How can i push to 500-550 mhz?Xp is too slow and İ cant chat in msn messenger fastly,it runs lowly.
My notebook has 160 Mb ram and a 8 mb onboard video, what can İ do?I hate windows 98 ,because of errors,İs windows 2000 ideal for my sistem?

Run Windows 2000 on xp?What are you mean? And İ looked with Cpu-z and Everest,it show mY L2 cache is "0" kb.But,this is false,it must be 512 kb I think my L2 cache was burned.

You have winXP installed on a laptop with 160mb of ram? I remember barely running winXP with 256mb. I think he meant for you to install windows2000 and optimize it with a program called "nlite".
Dont even bother overclocking it. Do it if you are absolutely bored because the gains are so small it isnt even worth the trouble.

And i looked in bios,İt says 640 Kb total Cache found, but when İ enter windows it says 0 kb.(I looked everest too),what is the problem? And my notebook have a fan and it is automatic,I cant intervention it.I installed speed fan program but İt isnt solve my problem

1. Buy new ram (512mb)
2. Reinstall windows

look if l2 cache is enabled in bios. and load the optimized settings in bios!

2. Reinstall windows
I cant buy notebook ram(512 mb)because İ couldnt find, and my notebook supports maximum 128 mb(it is writing in notebook user guide).
My notebook have 32 mb,and I bought +128 mb ram...
I reinstalled windows xp 2 times, but It didnt works.Maybe,I must try Windows Xp without Service Pack? Are service packs cause to slowly pc?
"look if l2 cache is enabled in bios. and load the optimized settings in bios!"
I cant look because my bios is locked.I can enter the bios, but I cant change cpu speed,voltage,l2,or memory timings etc.
I press F9 button to load default settings,it didnt worked.
How can I enable L2?And I was using PIII 500 and'a 256 Mb ram with Xp Pro normally. It didnt slowly...
Some of people are said that, your cpu is based on Pentium 1?

your system is so slow, because you only have such low ram.
in my opinion i would sell the laptop at ebay and then build myself a budget system!

Putting XP on that laptop is kinda like doing this:

Notebooks cannot be overclocked because they are designed to handle a certain amount of heat, the additonal heat from overclocking would be beyond the cooling system's capability.

Hmm thanks for that.I have 98 Se Licensed Cd(It came with laptop),but I hate 98,so I must fınd Windows 2000 on it:)

My notebook price is?250$ is good for my laptop?I have desktop system, and I am modding my quake case. But the modding is not complete, and one week after,I will paint it.İt will very nice case mod,I bought some Led fans etc.
I will sel this laptop maybe, when I can buy new monitor to my desktop system, and with this laptops money,I will buy 6800 Gt and 80 Gigs Hdd...
But it is not certain, because maybe I will sell all desktop parts, and I dont have any money,so I must manage with my laptop....
So I am going,to buy Windows 2000 Cd,good bye!

Not true, I've overclocked a 700mHz PIII to 840mHz in a laptop, and the only thing that stopped it was the PLL wouldn't go any higher. The problem is he has a K6, which weren't good at overclocking.
CPUFSB is much more compatable than clockgen, especially with older computers. Unfortunately it has less features, like no AGP/PCI lock. Download it, it's your only chance.
Also, V1.33 of cpu-z got more support for K6 (yeah, a little late). Try the even newer 1.34 and see if it reads your L2 cache.
You could try ebay for a faster CPU. I think K6-3 went up to 550mHz. Best would be to spend $500 on a new notebook.

Very very thank you!!I will try it now,if it runs fast,I didnt install Windows 2000 or 98...
EDİT:My notebook adapter is 60W...Will it cause a bottleneck for overclocking?
EDİT2:I downloaded and installed Cpu Fsb,I tried to select pll controller, and I select one of them(Because I dont know my notebooks pll),I tried to increase fsb,and my system locked:(

I looked cpu fsb author site,and I downloaded Cpu Z V 1.34...I cant saw L2 mem,but I saw my chipset..
VT82C686...
Cpu-Fsb is supports my mobo chipset, but Still I cant find my Pll generator...İn generally, which pll generator is using with via chipsets?

K6-2 L2 cache is on-board.... not on-die, that is why you don't see it on CPU-Z

Thanks for information about K6:)
But when ı was using P3 500 Processor,(it was slot),I can see 512 Kb l2 cache,its same with k6,its l2 cache is onboard too,but I can see in everest 512 kb's...
In bıos,it says 640 kb total cache, and its true??
64+64+512...
Thank you very much...And I missed somethink, this cpu has 9.3 million transistor, how can it 512 Kb level 2 cache on die :lol

No.
L2 Cache on K6-2 processors was on the actual motherboard using a special memory stick
On P3s it was on the processor's PCB, it wasn't on the core itself, but it was on the CPU's PCB, and the processor reported it to CPUID programs.
K6 and K6-2 chips didn't have on-die L2 cache, only K6-III (3) had L2 cache.
If I were you, I wouldn't bother OCing this system as there is not much use. The things that's making your system so slow is WindowsXP.
I recommend you either install 2000 or 2003 Server. Those OSes can easily handle low RAM systems.

Another option is to turn off all the eye candy in Xp, then shut down a few unneeded services...

My god man, Dell has a laptop on sale right now for the month of June for $449. Not anything real fancy, but 1 gig of RAM, celeron 1.5 and a smallish 14 inch screen. I just ordered one for a friend of mine and it actually runs pretty good for what it is. As long as your not trying to do any powerhouse stuff like gaming it works real nice. I ordered as advertised and after shipping and tax it came to $496.63 and arrived a week after it was ordered. And it came with a free Netgear wireless G router. Ebay that POS and get one.

Thank you very much guys...I will install Windows 2000 when I find 2000 cd...And one more question,my notebook fan is automatic,it runs faster or slow anytime,I cant change it,if my notebook gets higher tempratures(I feel it,my keyboard warms up...),but I want to adjust my fan in speed fan, first,I can see the tempretures in everest, but I cant see now,and SPEED fan cant read my chipset:(

about f**king time. K6's and K6-2's dont have any L2 cache. unless its on the motherboard. btw, that laptop is FAR too slow to do anything about. id throw it away, or use the processor in a desktop pc as a print server...
i overclocked my K6-2 500 to 600 MHz. jumpers on the motherboard change the multiplier :D it was still slow as hell. the heatsink didnt even get warm to the touch.

K6 notebooks usually have jumpers for voltage and multiplier, and perhaps even FSB. I have one that does. I dropped a K6-3+ in that bad boy and overclocked it to 550 MHz. K6-3 is actually really quick (relatively!) It's a lot faster than K6-2 cuz of its on-die 256K cache. The K6+ chips (2+ and III+) both have on-die cache (128 and 256) and are built with 0.18 micron tech so they run quite cool as well.
But no K6 system will ever be fast. It's all very old tech now days.
