Last night I decided to take my shim off my radeon 9500 to get some better contact. I ended up gouging into the core and knocking ~4 of those smd resistors off. Strangely the video card still works ok, except the 3d has a strange wire mesh look. I really gouged it too, Ill post some pics up after the audioslave concert. Looks like a FX for me, my ti500 will have to last me for a month or so.

Had fun with mine don't think there was any contact with mine
couple of mm's of silver goup between heat sink and core was all
there was transfering heat contact as such was none existant
managed to get the shim to flick of with a sharp cutting blade
and bolted a nice big heatsink on... works good now :)

Sorry to hear that I had the shakes too when taking off the shim, but mine poped right off. The heat spreader over the mem regulators on the R9700 pro v1 was real scary too, I just knew the regulators would come off with it !! I guess thats why they went with the pins on the later versions.

One of my friends did the same thing except he just gouged the core and after that it was fuct.

My 9700p shim popped right off with ease tho. :D

Oh guys letme tell you Chris Cornell and Tom Morello are a sick combination. That was one of the best concerts ive been to in a while. If you like soundgarden and/or rage GO, trust me go. They didnt play any covers of soundgarden, or rage as i hoped(but knew they wouldnt). §§§§ing kick ass show. And ya i went at that shim with force on one side just trying to get under the metal. As soon as i got under it the force just kept going and i sliced a whole corner of the core off. Ill snap some pictures of the damage when i get home. Now Im hearing the r350 will be out in 31 days. What to do...

Send it to me and i'll fix it with donor parts from mine 8-)
