just having a play with the gfx card but im not to sure what sort of temps are fine/safe what shouldnt i be going past on idle/load

Mine XFX 7900GTX @ 750MHz core (delta=0)
idle ~51C
load ~64C

BFG 7900GTX@stock, mine idles 39-41; Loads 49-52... they say you should be fine under 70 at load.
