Alright, I need a new computer ASAP, this one aint cutting it. I want to wait for Conroe, but I can't, I am only gonna overclock this system on maybe 500mhz, no more. Do you guys think I should go Yonah? Or should I just get the new 9 series. This PC will be strictly for video/audio editing. I was also thinking of maybe getting an Opty 170 or a X2. And I also looked at the new AM2 3800 cpu, how are those?

My budget it $1200 for this system.

I put a quick one together, something like this:

AM2 3800+
MSI M/B
1gb DDr2
7600gt
300gb seagate

I seriously dont know what to get... The reviews of the Yonah on stock speeds suck... X2 beats it out... But yeah... Really lost here.

Thanks

how early are you going to order this system? Conroe supporting boards are coming out in a couple of days (like 6). Can you wait that long? You can tack something like a Pentium D 930 to that and some DDR2 667 or 800 and be able to upgrade to Conroe later on without spending another 1200 dollars.

Even without overclocking Conroe matches an FX60, So theres no point in buying anything else at the moment.

expensive conroe boards and no major supplies on conroe at beginning.
and a 930 that sucks performance/price and will give 25 % price left within a month . go for the am2 at the moment (altough those prices will drop also probably), if you dont like it sell it but i will be a long-term platform 65nm and k8L

@Owen1978 maybe on games, superpi and single thread 32bit..... yes 64bit multithread NO
and its not there and you'll have very hard time to find them until Q3

Where is your proof for 64bit? You talk of expensive boards but please allow me to break this down for you.

E6700 = $500 or so
Conroe board = $269
Total = $769

AM2 FX-62 = $1000
Decent Board: 180
Total = 1180

The E6700 has shown to be very competitive against FX-62 and look at cost difference.

Not to mention the overclock head room of E6700 compared to FX-62

First of all calling the E6700 competetive against FX-60 doesnt cut it, the E6700 simply rapes the FX-60...

Um, how does the D930 suck in price/Performance when it costs 2/3 the price of the X2 3800? The D930 costs approximately 200. Also there are Conroe boards which will be less than 70 bucks (updated Asrock board based on 945PL, see Conroe board thread). Where did you get the idea that Conroe loses to X2/FX chips in 64 bit multi-threaded? Please don’t post if you have no idea if what you are stating is accurate.

My advice is to wait a few days and pick up a cheaper P965 board along with a PD 930 and upgrade to conroe later. If you go AM2, you wont be able to upgrade to conroe without getting a new motherboard and it will cost more than a PD 930 system in the first place.
