View Full Version : Battlefield 2 Help !!!!!!!!
Hi all,
I have just installed a new AMD X2 4200+ CPU into my system (previously a AMD 3000+) - So much faster, everything worked like a charm until I tried to play my favourite game BF2.
Problem: Game locks up, then reboots PC, while browsing online servers or atttempting to load maps. I can't even get into a map to play, everytime I try the machine reboots. A couple of times it made that screech of death for a second or 2 then rebooted.
I tried playing MOTO GP, and that just hung the system, but I was able to recover it without a reboot. FEAR runs fine no problems at all. I am very confused !!
Now I know my machine has been working perfectly for the past 18 months before I dropped in the new CPU, so all I can do is blame the processor (or my config of it.)
I have searched the forums for hours looking for a solution. I know about task manager, affinity, 1 CPU turned off - doesnt seem to help.
I have installed the latest AMD X2 Drivers, Updated to the latest Gforce driver, updated my sound card driver.
I have also installed the latest 1.3 BF2 patch, full version.
My CPU and mainboard temps are LOW and cool all fans are running nicely.
A friend told me it could be that the powersupply hasnt got enough grunt but I would have thought 450w (500w peak) would be fine for a fairly basic set up, plus I cant imagine a huge graphic drain browsing servers in BF2.

2Gb (4 x 512mb DDR400)

450W Bluepower (Peak 500W) Power Supply

I'm not able to give you any solution, but i would think that is something to do with dual core CPU .

Try raising the voltages a bit for the new CPU... Perhaps the BIOS got it screwed up??
Clear CMOS and take it from there (seeing as you've installed a new CPU by yourself, I suppose you know your way around your BIOS :) )
[EDIT] Just saw you're running with 4x512mb RAM... dunno if that's got anything to do with it, but as said, Clear CMOS :)

Yeah I got the same problem yesterday after I installed the 1.3 patch. Roll it back to patch 1.22 and it should work like a charm. At least that was my case.

But doesn't that severly limit the number of servers you can play on?

#5 Not really, I still get more than 1000 servers available every time I play... Still using 1.22 last time I checked, don't think it would dl such a patch without my knowledge :)

I'm having the same issue with 1.3 patch. I find a server...clikc join and crash to desktop with no error. I have un-did my OC increased voltage and gone to CAT6.5 and still nothing. How do I roll back to 1.22?

You don't. Have to uninstall/reinstall.

yea I think I raped my install.
I went from 1.0 I guess to 1.22 to 1.3 then I re-patched with 1.22 I have like 1.7 now lol.
I'm pretty sure any motherboard made this millenium knows it has to adjust the voltages itself, when the machine boots it correctly identifies the CPU as does Windows, so I dont really like the idea of ramping up the voltage manually.
The game displayed the same problems with 1.22 which is why I thought it was my lucky day when 1.3 patch was released the same day I did the install of the CPU - unfortunately still doesnt work.
Do you guys think the power supply is sufficient - being a 450 Watt, running a dual core x2 and one 7800 card ???
I have run some other system diags and the +5v rail is only running at +4.35v
is this low enough to cause me problems??

j101. I will refrain from :flame: but most of us here manualy adjust our voltage because we are overclocked.
As for your question...yea 4.35V on the 5V line could cause some issues, especially if your board is pulling Vdimm from it. The X2 is not particularly tough on a PSU...but a 7800 might be.
Also try to measure your voltage with a multi rather than software, software is often way off.
Oh and welcome to XS ;)

did you make sure to reformat after you put the new cpu in? did you install the amd dual core drivers?
Reformat after a CPU install, manually tweak the voltage on a stock system (No offence but these sound like extreme measures for the average noob)
Happy to say 24 hours and $200 later and a shiny new ANTEC 550 PSU humming away and the computer is back to normal NO LOCK UPS IN GAMES, No Problems At All
Thumbs down to my 3 month old FSP Bluestorm 500, If anyone is thinking of buying one DON'T - $150 down the gurgler - I don't think it could handle the peak power demand ;-(
BTW also thanks to all those who tried to help ;-)

Yes, this looks like it's probably the issue.
With DFI boards the problem is epidemic (see DFI-Street), and many once excellent PSUs are being found at fault.
One highly recomended one is the FPS here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104015)
or this one here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104014)
Later this year or early next most all makers have announced completely redesigned PSUs, usually at 1000W to handel the newer stuff thats on its way.
For now, try to borrow a bigger PSU and if things change, then thats your proof.

To anyone who gets CTDs when loading a map with the new patch, I deleted my bf2 folder in \My Documents\ and it solved my problems.

all that did was basically delete your gfx cache, among other things
(like controls)

I have similar issues with the patches, right now I don't have any patch installed and I can play perfectly fine. 1.3 gave me major trouble, the game would act like I only had 256 megs RAM, even though my HDD was not being accessed. 1.22 is better, but still not playable as it would pause for about ~20 seconds from time to time.
I can play other games fine, Oblivion is perfect and I take no errors in ~24 hours of stress pi on both cores and RAM.
I'll attempt the patch/delete my documents as Nettwerk suggested, this may work as after I uninstalled(keeping my profiles/server configs) I would still have the same problems with the clean install...only after doing a COMPLETE uninstall would it run fine.
