... 256 MB more of RAM or a CPU upgrade to an AXP 2000+? I have 256 MB of DDR already, and a nice AXIA 1133 Tbird. My dad wants to run 3DS Max and Maya (he's a jewellery designer) and he thinks this system is underpowered for those apps. So he is willing to finance an upgrade ( and who am I to disagree ? ;) ), and 1 of the above 2 upgrades is within our budget. So what do you think would make more of a difference.. the extra RAM or the CPU upgrade?
Thanks in advance..

i agree with shray, a 2100+ is really the AMD CPU to get these days if you overclock, along with the 1700+. But make sure its a Tbred B :)

if you want to run 3ds or maya i say ram 512 is the minimum i would run thoes programs with. the cpu you can just grab a 1700 for like 50-60 dollars from newegg later.

Wow.. half an hour and lotsa replies! Thanks guys!
The thing is, (yeah I can OC!!), this damn mobo I have does not support the Tbred processors! TBred A AND B are both not compatible with this POS
Believe you me, I've been drooling over the overclocks people have been getting with those Tbred Bs :( . What sucks is that Soltek is the ONLY manufacturer whose KT266A board does not support TBreds of any flavour. Damn damn damn!!!
Ok.. so the consensus seems to be a new CPU?
Thanks

Nahh Docyt, I've actually tried this board with an AXP Tbred from a cousin's machine. It is unstable as hell, with random reboots and freezes. Guess I've gotta take Soltek's word on this

did you lower the voltage i cant rember what the tbirs run at but paliminos run at .1 volts highter that tbreds the heat might have been you problems but as i said above for the apps you want to run get the 256 more ram you will notice the difference:)

...I'm still using a KT133A board that runs a TBRED (A), unrecognized, but it runs fine . I also have an Abit NF7-S revision 1.2 in the mail though, excited about this one.

The first board that I had was a Soltec K62 board , Soltec didn't support that board at all, couldn't even run a K6III in it. No more Soltec for me.

Now is a good time to upgrade though, 1700+ TBRED 'B', are going for around $50, and 256 sticks of memory are falling in price substantially. You might be able to find a KT333 board cheap somewhere. I know that at least some of these ( Epox 8K5A2 for sure ) are Barton approved also, so you're open to the future as well.

Good luck with your decisions.

Thanks for all the replies guys! The CPU upgrade should be done tomorrow, cos I got my hands on some 128 MB DDR Ram for free :D . There ya go docyt, best of both worlds , so to speak ;)
I'm excited... we don't really do much more on this computer anyway, and all games run just fine with my vidcard and 15" monitor, at 1024*768, so this upgrade should stand me in good stead..... for another 6 months at least :D
