THG (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030210/index.html) has a good comparison of the processors and it looks a little bleak for the new 3000+ especially when you factor in the rediculous $600 price tag.

wow and toms hardware guide is a biased site which has been known for posting fake benchmarks so i wouldnt listen to a single word they say

I've seen a couple of other reviews that show similar findings. Notice that he isn't stating that Intel is beating the 3000 it's showing that the PR rating is way too generous for the new processor.

Bottom line here....AMD is buying time. They could have easily released the Barton at 2.25 and kicked major azz...but they didn't.

There is no doubt that AMD is trying to stretch out what ever remaining overhead there is in the Barton core. They obviously decided to just try to "stay close" to intel rather than jump on top.

I beleive that AMD has been a bit generous in it's performance rating for sure. Although I've been waiting for Barton, I'll wait a little longer. There is no way i will plunk down $600 just for a chance that the 3000+ outperforms my XP 2700.

mdzcpa,

couldn't agree more. AMD just tries not to provoke Intel. anyways, IMO AMD is still better choice for us these days.

That's the problem, I don't think it will, especially not $300 worth of performance!

I'm sure a 2800+ barton for ~$360 will be a better buy for an overclocker than a p4 intel chip at roughly the same price. I agree the price on the 3000+ is rediculous. I hope the first hammers are gonna be at most in the 300's

what gets me is that AMD lowered the actual MHZ, keeping the same PR rating.

i am not surprised a 2800+ smacked it.

that said, my main rig is tight, it is fast, it is AMD.

backup rig is a P4 InteloMatic, although running faster, it is a slug by comparison.

just my take.
