Pretty lame move by Sun in an other bid to catch some attention: they welcome Dell to the AMD party after such stupid stunts as flying a biplane with signs saying AMD servers are better etc etc.

What the idiots don't realize is that Sun's clients that aren't too keen on using Solaris and RISC based servers will dump their Sun comps and opt for Dell's greater service and reliability.

Dell Should respond: "Thanks for the welcome, but I believe you're leaving now."

Its always nice to welcome the 800 pound gorilla into your market. Indeed...

Dell: "What was that press release again?"
Sun: "Uh...nothing...I think my marketing team's calling"

Most of the servers Sun sells for the past 2 to 3 years have been AMD Opterons and not RISC based servers. Sun did a smart move by adding servers based on AMD Opteron and they sold a ton of them.

Dell has better service and reliability than Sun? Don't read any sarcasm into that, I just know nothing of Sun's service and reliability, and I only have experienced bad things with Dell's service/reliability.

From talking to some friends it seems to be a mixed bag when it comes to Dell's server support. Its defo better than their PC support (as you would expect) and they often get people round really fats to fix problems, but if they need a part they often won't order it for a while. My old school used to use Dell servers but they run custom units now because when one of the RAID controllers broke they didn't get a replacement in for 2 months by which time the network admin had already ordered and installed a new one by himself.
