Anyway I took some pictures of my cat recently and as you can see in the example, they all look little overexposed do to bad lighting/crappy machine/unskilled photographer.

So, is there any way to edit this in PS to make it less overexposed. I have the old 7.1 version.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Yes. My 3 year-old Cybershot DSC P-72 3.2 megapixel camera definetely shows it's age. I wish there is a way to improve this picture. @cooper: I tried what you did but, honestly, I didn't like how the whites turned out so I'm looking for a way to eliminate the excess light while preserving the softness of the overall picture.

I think that the problem is with the photographer, not with the camera.

1. You have uneven lighting (right side of picture is darker)

2. You were too close to use the flash (better to move away and zoom in, or turn the flash down a notch if possible)

3. Exposure was bit too long (right ear is blurred)

4. If camera has bracketing you should have used it (or if it doesn't you should have fired one underexposed right after the first one and compose them).

5. If you used macro mode, then you were definately too close (barrel distortion on the shelf is visible and cat head looks larger than it should)

Most of this can be fixed one way or another but the burned details in the white fur cannot be restored in any way.
