    Lightbulb Core i7 950 and 975 to Replace 940 and 965 in Q2 - Same Pricing

    Core i7 950 and 975 to replace 940 and 965

    Q2 launch, higher OC potential

According to sources in the Taiwan motherboard industry, Intel plans to update its Core i7 processor lineup next quarter with two new models, the Core i7 950 and Core i7 Extreme 975. These models will essentially replace the Core i7 940 and Core i7 Extreme 965 at higher clock speeds, a new stepping revision, and the same respective price points.

The recently announced Core i7 950 will run at 3.06GHz, roughly 130MHz faster than its 940 predecessor, and will be priced again at $562 in quantities of 1000. Likewise, the Core i7 Extreme 975 will run at 3.33GHz, roughly 133MHz faster than its 965 Extreme predecessor, and will be priced again at $999 in quantities of 1000. As usual with Intel's Extreme Edition processors, the 975 will have an unlocked multiplier to "justify" the price premium. Additionally, both CPUs will carry Intel's new D0 stepping, which promises better overclocking potential as shown by Fugger and Mikeguava from XtremeSystems in their 3DMark 05 world record set on the 975 Extreme. Additionally, some internal testing has been done by motherboard manufacturers in Taiwan who have reported significant overclocking potential over the C0 stepping launched back in November.

A few days ago, Intel also revealed that it will launch its Core i7 920 D0 revision on March 2nd. We can expect higher overclocking potential from this chip as well, although no specific performance increases are known as of yet. This chip will be priced again at $284 in quantities of 1000.

On a final note, both C0 and D0 stepping processors will be out on the market at the same time, so it is solely the consumer's responsibility to be careful when choosing this time around.

One is for OEM like HP, Dell, etc I believe.
The other is retail CPU box.

no surprise that the 940 dies, does anybody actually use one? ^^

950 will be 23x133, so with turbo thats effectively 24 if you force turbo on with all 4 cores, so basically the same as a 965 without turbo

24x200 should be enough to max out almost all c0/D0
if you really want to reach the max clocks the silicon can do you still need to buy a 965 or 975 and dig deep in your pockets...

    2666
    266
    2933
    266
    3200

    2666
    400
    3066
    266
    3333

so intel is lifting up the high end hoping to make it more attractive... i still think 90% of people will go for a 920 though...
the extra clockspeed from 920 to 950 still just isnt worth to pay double the price...
if intel drops the 950 to 400$ then itll be interesting, but 500+ is too much...

Runmc just went 5000mhz with a i7-920 bought for $239.00 from Microcenter!
Can't beat that with a stick!

Yeah can't beat a GOOD i7 920 in terms of $$$ to cpu mhz ratio

Wonder how well D0 i7 920 will do against my i7 920 twins

Both cpus have similar max air cooled HT enabled 32M Pi ceiling of under 4500Mhz. HT needs to be disabled for greater than > 4500Mhz on air cooling.

week 36 was a good week for i7 silicon

Yea, but thats in your hands.

Close, I think they actually mean Tray and Boxed. So, you could say OEM but you could buy a tray and resell them without the heatsink.

Doesn't suprise me, 920 is currently too popular, with this Intel hopes at least for some improved higherend SKU sales.

I wonder if D0 will be more strictly binned for 920 ? leaving better scaling D0 for 950, 975 etc ?

I'll phrase it this way, when I want to know something about memory there are two people here that I go to their threads..you and bachus..

I plan on picking one up if the numbers are right. My batch is good for 4ghz 24/7 with HT and 4.566ghz for benching so I am in no rush...

But...I could always upgrade . I may spring for that 975 if the taxes come out right.

that perfectly matches with what i said, doesnt it?
if he had a higher multi he could go even higher i bet...
the newer chips seem to clock better so we need higher multis to really max them out

i dont think thats a matter of binning, i think they all clock very close cause of the transistor tech they use...
thats at least what some intel engineers said... they have less variation now... good for us

Dont ever play the waiting game... you end up never buying anything and still sitting on a P4
