    RAID 2X VelociRaptor 150GB or 1x VelociRaptor 300GB?

I was almost done upgrading my computer but my Western Digital WD Caviar SE WD2500 300mb/s that came with my old Sony computer is really slowing me down. Im going to need a new hard disk.

Now my question is, is Raid really work the extra bucks? does it really give better performance ? I never used it

    $279.99

if you have the cash , go for it, raid 0 always give better performance than the single HD

there will be no doubt that the 2x VR150s will give more performance - what ppl debate about, is whether that extra performanc can be 'felt'... I am an individual who has tried RAID0 - & *felt* the performance difference; & enjoyed it - so i'm gonna recommend the 2x VR150 in R0

what u could do, is buy just 1x VR150 - the performance of the VR150 & VR300 is *very* similar iirc.. if one doesnt do the job, grab a 2nd one & RAID them

I just went from 2x Raptor 150's to 1x VR. It's definately slower than the RAID array, but it is quiter. I'll prolly be getting another VR to put in RAID when I do my next MB upgrade.

If you or anyone else is interested - I have 2x Raptor 150's sitting on my desk. Haven't gotten around to posting them in the FS section. I'd let them go pretty cheap.

    Neither one actually

Use 2 Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB drives instead, and create a RAID partition. Same speed, 4x the storage, and 1/3rd of the price

that's not really true, I notice the difference in seek times, especially if you raid them. That's like saying people can't see over 60 FPS in games, well guess what, I can. So I must be a freak of evolution or something lol. I am running 2x150GB Velociraptors in raid0 and love the speed.

+1 brutha. I too notice the smallest of increases, decreases, respnose rates, ghosting etc. I notice everything. Kinda sucks that way $ometime$

Yeah I feel you on that. Especially when someone else is standing right there and I'm like can't you see the screen flickering and there like huh I don't see anything.

Or you can do this and short-stroke those drives for improved seeks...

Well, that's what I mean when I'm talking about the RAID partition, sorry if it wasn't clear. Using Matrix RAID, create a small (ex:100GB) RAID partition on the outer tracks. This greatly reduces seek times

Better, create 2x150GB RAID0 and waste the remaining space

Does that mean raid only 100Gb is faster than raid the whole storage?
