Anyone tried the Dominator GT DDR2 8500 sticks?

I've just taken the plunge on a 4Gb pair of these and was hoping someone else may know what they're likely to perform like.

I'm hoping for 1200+ but I am doubtful I'll get that far, which will probably mean selling them for a pair of G.Skill tridents instead (which are rated for 1200+)

It would be good to hear anyone else's experiences.

I think they will perform as the G.Skill Trident 1200kit or the Ripjaws 1200 or the OCZ LV Blade 1066, they will topp out at max 1300, if you get very good sticks, they will do 1350, but not more. but as he said

test them and tell us !

That's where it becomes strange, I would provide a link, but there's nothing on their site about them. The place with the 'barcode-type name' sells them, but they're a tad pricey. If you think they'll be on a par with the Blades/Tridents, I can't wait to get my mitts on 'em!

I will tell all when they arrive - not coming tomorrow due to f**ing postal strike though :/

* Two matched 2GB modules for use in high performance Intel and AMD systems
* Outrageously fast 1066MHz performance
* Ultra-low 5-5-5-15 latency
* NVIDIA Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP) Support
* Dominator GT with rosso corsa accents
Since its rated at 2.1V, I doubt its using same chipset as those Blade LV
But then again, there is no proof that the site has the correct info at the time

The only info I managed to get was from new'ovum'. There's 3 reviews on there, and it seems like it could be top-binned RAM, but I guess I can only speculate. Others are saying it's got the wrong markings on it i.e. DDR3 and 1.65v! There's no reply on the corsair forum (except one chap who's got them at 1066, 5-4-4-12 on 1.8v) which sounds promising. The only thing I find rather iffy is Corsair's lack of acknowledgement with these modules, but I guess the proof will be in the pudding! Hopefully not long to wait now....

They arrived yesterday, and they were very well packaged. The only weird thing was it states 1.65v on the modules (ala DDR3), and there's no paperwork whatsoever. There's also nothing on their site, so I'm somewhat disappointed with the lack of info. I've read in a few places about the mislabelling of these too.

Still lots more testing to be done yet so I'm not going to slate these stick just yet, and getting my new CPU clocked is my priority, but tbh unless the bios is buggy, or there's a crucial timing I'm missing, or the ram skews need a bit of work, these really arent that impressive. They're not stable at 1120 on my MIIF with the current bios (2202), but they only need 1.8v for 1066. Running stock speeds with stock volts (2.1v) seemed to make them a lot more unstable and run uncomfortably hot at 42°C too

I will undoubtedly post some more info over this weekend, hopefully I won't need an RMA but I'm not holding a huge amount of hope :/

Please post a picture of the sticks, I'm interested in what info is printed on them.

Also, if they are really using Elpida chips, stay away from voltages > 1,8V. Try to raise your NB voltage to stabilize them. For now DDR2-1120 area is typical of PSC, let's see what it says on the sticks. I'm not familiar with PSC, isn't 1.8V too low for them to run DDR2-1066?

I'll get pics up the moment my other half gets back from the zoo with my camera

They do look real nice and are a good, solid weight and will suit the MIIF nicely if I can get them to overclock well enough. No idea what ICs are in them, but I've put up a post on the corsair forums to see if anyone can help.

The info reads:
CMG4GX2M2A1066C5
XMS2-8500 2048MB 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 1.65v ver7.1

My Dominator GT's ( DDR3 ) P/N starts with CMG too, I'm not sure if the P/N is used for other sticks too.

IC info is somewhat confusing, ver7.1 is PSC on the unified DDR3 memory IC info table, while ver7.1 can mean either PSC, Elpida or Promos on DDR2... I couldn't find any specific info on this kit.

Well, after a bit more testing, it seems like they don't respond too well to anything over 2.0v, they just churn out more memtest5 errors.
This is without the cooler attached so I may have to make some room for that and test some more.
So far they can reach somewhere between 1125 & 1150, at 5-5-5-15 on 1.86v but more testing is needed, and after reading the above comments, it looks like I could need even less voltage..
I was advised to use 2.1v on the corsair forums, but unless they respond amazingly well to the cooler, I can't imagine they would need that much.
I'm a tad perplexed as to why they can't offer any decent info on these sticks, but if it is as you say zsamz and they are supposed to be rated as 1.65v, then the minimum I can run them with is 1.8 - is that bad for the long term?
Not really DDR2 standards I guess, but with this information, can you determine the type a bit easier?

I'm with zsamz_ on this, those should be using Elpida, I'm almost 99% sure those are not PSC or ProMos. I need to repeat my advice, don't raise the voltage above 1.8V, these chips don't need that much voltage.
Can you test lower voltages? My Elpida chips did DDR2-1066 CL5 with 1.65V on my UD3P.
Can you post a MemSet screen of what subtimings you are running?

The lowest voltage I can run them with is 1.8v, so I'll step back down and see if it helps things. Thanks for the info guys, it's much appreciated

I'll just restart and pop up a memset pic....

I just reread my last post and I should have said it differently, please try to run DDR2-1066 CL5 with 1.80V, this should help us identify the chips, for overclocking up to 1.90V is okay.

Finally, some memset timings for you and a bench which I hope to improve on:

The sticks are 10-pass memtest stable at 1128 and need 1.91v to keep stable at these timings. Any less and I start to get small numbers of fails in test 5. I'm wondering if this would actually be a good point to try & tune the ram clock skews. Would anyone concur?
I hope to increase the fsb some more and hope to get around 1150 stable, are there any timings in the above pic that might benefit from being loosened so I could do this?
Seems strange they have 2.1v in the EPP profile, there's no chance they're stable at those volts without some good cooling imo.
1.6v isn't an option on my board btw, 1.8v is the minimum and it seems to scale ok up to ~1.9v but they start to get a little warm from that point, nothing toasty though

Thanks for all your input peeps

p.s. - did you want me to post the timings at stock speed too? If so I'll get them up in 4-5 hours

What you described is typical of Elpida chips, they do rather at low volts, up to 1.9V your gains will get smaller and over that points it will only add heat.
All mb-makers should add options for lower VDIMM to their BIOSes, but I'm afraid that won't happen any more.

The fact that you're running a quad core processor makes it even harder for the NB, you might reach the NB's limit faster than the limit of the memory.
Try to loosen up tRFC, try 75 as a starting point.
