ASUS P5B-Deluxe; Problems & Fixes

Ok now I'm fairly certain that the sticks are faulty. I tried using them on a friend's computer who is constantly using his own 4gb of some old memory, and his computer became totally unstable with my sticks too. So hopefully it all works out after I get them RMA'd.

A while back I changed my memory to 2 sets of mushkin 2GBs. I had one bad stick, so I returned that set to Newegg. No problem after. They are not a great overclocker, but, they work at 420 xDD2. I used the Microsoft Dos program to find the bad stick. Memtest is also good. Maybe you need to test one at a time. I had error in a very short time. For me, no long test was needed.

Ditch 'em.....get G.Skill instead. I used to get ONLY Corsair for my main rigs but for the same price or a little more? The G.Skill modules are far better IMO, preferably the HZ line.

The only thing that comes to mind are the EIST / Speedstep changed state , like either you slow down the cpu or something

How about a new XP Pro x64 driver? The current one breaks if you put the box to sleep (S3) and then wake up. Upon waking up, there is no sound until a reboot.

Yes. It works great. I got an E8600 for my main box (P5E) and put my E8400 in my secondary box (P5B-D) and I was right back at 4.0GHz runnin great. Great BIOS! Glad to see my P5B-D is still with the times!

I'm considering Q9400 I wonder if BIOS will not restrict voltage on 45nm CPU ? My board has quite nasty Vdrop.

I really dont recommend these for quads, Had my x3210 in it & wouldnt get stable at 3.4. Not too sure on the 45nm quads though. But this will scream with the dual 45nm's, my board will do 550+ fsb.

Anyone else having problems trying to run RAM at 600MHz+ on their P5B-Deluxe? My board is revision 1.03G with C1 stepping of the P965 chipset, and I have great difficulty clocking sticks that do DDR2-1200 in my Maximus Formula and Striker Extreme. Because of the PCI-E bug, I can't raise VMCH over 1.45. The thing that bugs me is seeing benchmarking results all over the web with D9GKX and D9GMH getting 620MHz+ with the P5B-D.

Someone asked if anyone was using the new 1236 bios. Well yes I am and so far it seems I cant use 2x2 gb gskill kit with my E8600. Not sure why yet but with my E6700 this 4gb kit worked flawlessly at 1067 (533mhz 5-5-5-15 non-overclocked) but after installing the new E8600 it only runs with one stick (either one) and nothing I do seems to let them work together with this newer cpu.

Can someone explain why these modules would run fine with an older cpu like the e6700 and not the newer e8600?

Has someone got their P5B Dlx to work with the new E8600 and 4 gb of memory in 2x2 setup? I had to reinstall my old TeamGroup DDR2-800's in order to run in dual channel mode.

Specs:
Asus P5B Deluxe bios 1236
Intel C2D E8600 E0
G.Skill F2-8800CL5D-4GBPI

System is in RAID 0 with 4 WD Raptors and running Windows XP x64. My initial symptoms were the mobo would not boot, just hangs at the Asus P5B flash screen. When I remove one module (doesn't matter which one) the system boots into the bios and into windows just fine. The problem I have is that these memory modules run fine in dual channel mode at DDR2-1067 with my E6700 but not at all with my newer E8600 cpu.

Anyone have a clue why? Have I missed something simple? Thanks for any help you can provide.

The 12.36 bios may support the new E0 processors but it's likely a far from perfect bios and a few incompatibilities like you're getting should be expected. I'm just happy to hear that you can run an E0 on a board that is this old. Did you try adjusting all of your voltages a little bit, including your memory voltage. You could also try dropping your memory down to DDR2-800 speeds to see if that helps. With a 10X multi, you have a lot of flexibility. Asus has been good to owners of this board with more bios updates than most manufacturers give you so hang tough and maybe they'll get this fixed in the next release. 12.36 is beta so there's still hope for an official final bios release.

I'm using 12.36 and I just re-installed my E8400. These boards aren't great with Quads but they run better than a lot of newer boards when you're using a Dual Core. I'm back to 450 MHz x 9.0 for my Prime stable, 24/7 settings and with this new bios, they finally fixed the problem with Stand By mode. When I first installed that E8400 6 months ago, it would go into Stand By mode but when I tried to resume it would always hang and I'd have to re-boot. Now it works flawlessly.

@ snnoopypw, yes it seems to work just fine as long as you enable Memory Remapping feature in the BIOS (in order to see all 4 gigs in a 64bit OS). But even with Memory remapping enabled, it don't seem to work with the new E0 cpu's. At least my 2x2 G.Skill kit did not work what so ever even with heavy bios modifications to voltage, timings etc while a E0 cpu was installed. Ran fine with a E6700 though.

@ unclewebb, LOL, thanks for the reply, but I never did get a notification that a reply to this thread had been made after my initial post, and since then I just gave up and installed a new mobo. I now am running the Maximus II Formula with this E8600 CPU and 4 gb G.Skill kit and very happy with the results so far.

Thanks again, but I'm putting my old E6700 back into the P5B and turning it into an HTPC or giving it to my brother, lol... Have not decided yet...

I just ordered up 2GB of OCZ Reaper PC2-9200 memory for my P5B. At $35 CDN after rebates it was hard to say no.

The board seems a little memory fussy with the E0 and bios 12.36. I have 2x512MB of old generic DDR2-667 CL5 with Micron D9 chips that run reliably at DDR2-900 CL4 on this board but my Ballistix 2x1GB runs fine for days at the same speed but then won't boot up and I'll have to play around with bios settings and play musical memory to get it to boot up again. If it doesn't like the Reapers then maybe it's time to retire the P5B or wait for another bios to try.

Crucial memory isn't exactly the most reliable memory that you can buy.......

OCZ is good but not my cup of tea.

I used to like Corsair till I got screwed and ended up getting PROMOS ICs thinking they were D9s.

So, after trying G.Skill HZ modules? That's all I buy, G.Skill HZs are the best DDR2 modules and I also have the HKs which are also great for OC'ing, despite having PROMOS but they certainly can do better than Corsair's.

Fudget other brands for your P5B......G.Skill baby!

I'm also glad that Buffalo and their FURBAR stix are no longer made.

Because my P5B has always worked well with my old DDR2-667 512MB modules I decided to use SPDTool and copied the SPD info off of them, modded it slightly and then created a 1024MB version and saved that to my Team and Crucial sticks. The Micron / Crucial generic DDR2-667 CL5 modules have always booted without any problems. I noticed that they use "EPP Not Supported" in the SPD table so maybe that is confusing the P5B when I have my 1024MB Crucial Ballistix and Team in there.

Before the SPD mod if I turned the power off with the 1024MB modules in there it would sometimes not boot after wards. Even Hibernate mode would cause an issue. No problems so far but I'll have to wait a few days to see how it goes. PM me if you have this failure to boot issue with the E8000 series E0 and the P5B and Ill let you know how this mod works.

Maybe when the Reaper's show up I'll be able to finally get a sub 10 second SuperPi run out of this old board without the voltage getting too crazy:

So far so good. It had a real bit-ch of a time booting up before but the P5B seems happier when the SPD info shows that it is very meek memory. It still overclocks the same.

Edit #2: I just did my first ever resume from Stand By at 500MHz x 8.0. When I first got this board it would never resume properly when the FSB went over 450 MHz and I'd always have to re-boot. This board gets better with age and bios updates.

unclewebb was wondering what are your settings for 450mhz 24 7 set up.
I have a P5B Deluxe E8500 E0 stepping and I can run 435mhz 24 7 but any higher and I start to have problems. The only mod I have done is the pencil mod for voltage drop. I have 2x1gig sticks of PC 6400 G Skill memory. I am running the 1236 bios. I can boot up and run benchmarks at 475mhz but I can't seem to get stable at 450mhz. I can't get past 2 or 3 hours of Orthos.

Perhaps you're using a RATIO higher than 1:1 and at 450, if it's not a 1:1 you're gonna have to bump the RAM to 2.40v and use CAS 5-5-5 with a couple of features in the NB turned off.

As for Orthos? It's a joke IMO. I can't pass either but I've run my system OC'd at 3.15ghz for two years now. And 3DMark'06 finishes every single time.

Yes I have the memory running at 1:1 with 5-5-5-15-5 settings. My memory can't do 2.40v. I have the G Skill that is rated for 1.8 to 2.0 the most I will run it at is 2.1v.

sxs112 downloaded your 1237 bios and am trying it. Can you run 4-1gig sticks of memory and still overclock with this bios?

I would not call Orthos a joke. If you can't pass it, I think you either have a bad OC or a Windows OS problem. I loop Prime 95 and 3DMark06 simultaneously before I will keep a OC.
