Smile Back in business- ASUS 4870X2 CF /Rampage Extreme / E8600

Summer is over now and it is time to start benching again

This summer was really nice, cause I had three OC events. One here with Russian overclockers and AOCC 2008 in Hong Kong and MSI OC event in Amsterdam.

I didn't have much time to prepare before these runs, so they are my base scores for this autumn.

I bought this E8600 from local shop and I wasn't too lucky, but not the most unluckiest either

    Setup:
    ASUS Rampage Extreme
    ASUS 4870X2 CF
    Gigabyte/ Club3D 4870 CF
    G.Skill DDR3 2GB HZ (6-6-5-15)
    Thermaltake Thoughpower 1200W

First I tested, what this setup can do on aircooling. CPU did 4.8GHz with 1.46V (real) and cards ~852/1050

    Setup on aircooling:

    I got 129K in 03

    Then some pictures:

    Then we have the scores:

This chip did 1M at 6.4GHz easily:

Aquamark was bit better with dual 4870 than 4870X2 if we look the MHz efficinecy:

01 was fun to watch, (except Nature) with dual 4870. There is no tweaks at all, cause there was no point in that (850/1050 used):

3Dmark03 was nice to test with these new cards. No bugged scores here (850/1050 used):

05 is one of my favorites, but this time I had some troubles with GPU/mem clocks (800/970 used):

I had only 20L of LN2, so I had to make it quick. I had to test all 2D and 3D tests, so there was not too much time to bench one particular benchmark.

Now I will start to tune this setup and try some different cooling for the vgas soon

    Thanks for checking this thread!
You are as good as your samples are!

nice going SF3D, do you have a modded bios which opens up ati overdrives max gpu clock as i'd rather use overdrive to overclock over 800 core but no asus top bios about for the x2 , i also got 129k on 03 at 4800 mhz not bugged score with cards at 840 core 940 mem with tight ram timings, annoying i am getting beaten by people running 4500mhz and cards at stock clocks , unless you could share you can alway PM them to me

Thank you all! It is nice to be able to bench again..summer was really hard time

Northbridge cooler is from Striker II Extreme like Dedal saw.
CPU Vcore was 1.99-2.02V during benchmarks. I was limited by motherboard, not by this chip when using CFX.

Next move is to find some better stability with two graphics cards and cool them down with LN2. I have 4 tek9's here waiting and I got two DIY bracket kits for these cards

Single card LN2 runs can be done in a short time.

These scores are good base scores for me like I said earlier

    Very nice start!

144k with 6200MHz, 4870X2 CFX @ 870/1050MHz is not right. Lower cpu freq and 3870X2 CFX 1000MHz core scores around 140k (870MHz 4870X2 is so much more powerfull). Are you using 32 or 64 bits? Service pack 1? We need to find out why for some 4870X2 performance in 03 is about the same as 3870X2.

    NICE start M8.......

2k3 and 4870x2 under certain circumstances are NOT always react the same...
The VGAs clocks ARE NOT WORKING TOGETHER as you have picked them.....You could put 870MHz core for example BUT it will be taken down to 750MHz (default) when the bench starts.....
This happens NOT on ALL 4 cores of the 2 x 4870x2 VGAs.....

SAME HAPPENS ALSO with 2 x 4870s OR with ONE 4870x2.....

THE BEST is to open amdtool, overclock the master, close it, open 2k1 and pick NATURE, run the NATURE for about 2 sec and press escape, close 2k1, open amdtool and NOW put the other Core's frequencies in, RE-OPEN 2k1 and RE-RUN NATURE for 2 sec to confirm........THEN OPEN any 3DBench and bench it.....

PAIN IN THE A(R)SS overclocking CF or CFX isn't it?......

Have exactly the same problem, happens even if I set in bios. Yes, CF still is a pain in the ass to overclock

same problem though in flashing the cards and not using CCC

In theroy If you flash to the top bios 790/915 you would think if this happens the way say Hipro said it does 'throttling' it would yeild better results over that of the stock 750/900 bios every time bug or not sicne one bios is defualt alot higher than the other, but the results show that even using modded bioses like 850/950 and not using CCC this is still happening all the time also.

some things like gt4 nature, nature 01 and so on dont show this

and running 03 each test seprate and watching the gpu clocks in say rivatuner show no drop in speeds so you have to dig deeper to answer what is really going on here

Thanks Hipro5 and Kinc! I have to test this as soon as possible. It might be the reason for low CF scores. Single card is ok I think.

Yep, noticed the same thing clocking with AMD GPU Tool, but all of a sudden my system decided it would play nicely and from then on it would always stay locked.
    That was on XP btw.
