Asus Rampage Formula Memory Compatibility & OC Info

    Hello everybody!

I have created this thread to bring together everybody that owns an Asus Rampage Formula motherboard and has been able to overclock certain kits of memory past 1066mhz.

To my own experience, I find this board is very picky with memory. I've tried:

    OCZ Plat.XTC 6400 Rev2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)
    - Certain rating timings aren't availible under the options in rampage bios
    - Will not OC with stability past 400FSB, and have ran 500FSB 1:1 on my previous P35 boards.
OCZ claims they are compatible, I think they are incompatible.

    UPDATE:Patriot Vipers 9600 (PVS22G9600ELK)

    - Website claims compatible with 680i and P35 chipsets.
    - Patriot claims they have tested this kit with some x38/x48 boards, but not the maximus or rampage.
Thus, incompatible however, Patriot claims these kit uses Micron D9's which are rampage QVL.

    UPDATE:Patriot Vipers 9600 (PVS22G9600ELK)
    - I got a response back from patriot. The 9600 Viper Fins do use the micron d9 chips, thus making these sticks semi-compatible.
    - USE THE WHITE SLOTS! I couldn't even get 1134mhz on the blue slots and now, i'm at 1164mhz 5:6 ratio 485FSB. Still no 1200mhz tho.
    - 5-5-5-12 seems to be too tight for the rampage. 5-5-5-15 seems okay with the rampage.

    UPDATE:Patriot Vipers 9600 (PVS22G9600ELK)
I was able to get the Viper fin 9600's at 1200mhz by using the Maximus Bios however, the performance decrased by almost 50% with read and write speeds of only 5gb/sec. tRD 60 helped as well.

    Crucial Ballistix Tracers 8500 (BL2KIT12864AL1065)
    - Crucial website claims 100% compatible with maximus and rampage
    - Some threads i found claim they are not compatible
    - I just bought these sticks, and yes they run at rated 1066mhz but reviews state hitting 1200mhz is no sweat yet any devider I try and timings/voltage, 1200 or anything past 1066 is no go.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    UPDATE: Crucial Ballistix Tracers 8500
There are two versions of these kits which aren't mentioned in any reviews or on any of the packaging of the kits offered by crucial:

    BL2KIT12864AL1065.16FD3
This version was the first release, dual sidded micron D9 chips and are listed in the QVL rampage list. They also clock to 1200mhz without a sweat.

    BL2KIT12864AL1065.8FE5
This is the newer kit, and they are crap. They are one sided sticks, and they are NOT micron d9's.
They are NOT listed in the QVL, thus crucial is false advertising on compatibility. This kit also barely oc's to 1100mhz, and has crappier cooling.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm starting to lean towards that the rampage needs work with new bios's. Oc'ing memory with this board has been challenging.

Anybody else that has experience with oc'ing their memory on a rampage board please share your experiences. Thanks!

Here is the most updated QVL for Rampage Formula.

for me this board is so easy to o/c (just using auto function for the most part), but i have to say i have not had the time to familiarize with the so many options available with this bios.

are the tracers double sided or single sided dimms?

i have 6gb's of the good tracers and do not think i'll get around to playing with them on this board.

but when i used them on the commando they were excellent. tracers on commando were 4x1gb @ 4-4-4-12@1000mhz 2.2v

    Rampage Ram -
    i've been running 8gb's of mushkin 24/7 - first used em2-6400's 4x2gb
    now mushkin hp2-6400 4x2gb q6600@3.51ghz

guys help me out here. i'm walling at 470fsb, 1129mhz on the ram.

they should go a lot higher shouldn't they?

i don't know what you mean by single sided or double sided, but they are the black sticks with the led's 8500 series 5-5-5-15 for 533mhz

Welp, returning those tracers wasn't a problem after explaining that they pretty much falsified their revision of the 8500's.

I'm no back on my viper 9600's. currently walling at 473 fsb, 1136mhz DDR.

I sent an email to patriot asking if the viper 9600's use micron d9's which are compatible with the rampage and are QVL listed.

The non viper 9600's use micron d9's but the cooling on those sticks are pretty bad, and they are $30 bux more than the vipers.

    C'mon patriot, pull through PLEASE!

    Bad crucial, SHAME ON YOU!

and OCZ, well, self explanitory ^.^

Yesterday was my first day with the rampage formula.

I have used cellshock pc8000cl4 at 583Mhz 5-5-5-18 and run some 3dmarks for fsb check.
Memory was with 2.2V . CPU was at 583Mhz with 1:1 divider.
    No stability problems . I could run 3dmark06 at 583 , spi32m at 585 and wprime1024m at 590mhz .

Today i bought one kit of red cellshocks 1150mhz cl5 ! ... and one kit of teamgroup 1300mhz cl6 . I haven't checked them yet , but i hope for some good results !

I have had many problems with Super Talent T8UB2GC5 2GB DDR2-800 with my Rampage Formula in both 2x2GB and 4x2GB configurations.

Many people have reported luck with 2GB GSkill F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQR sticks.

Buffalo Firestix PC2-9600, Micron D9GKX are loving this board thus far. voltage is high because thats just where i started. i am priming right now at 640MHz 2.30v, could probably still go lower. the Everest vDIMM is bang on with my board as measured from the DIMM slot...all other information should be in the screenshot.

    click for full size...

BTW, this is the same kit as the OC Report in my signature which was done on a P5B-Dlx. same limit it seems at 650MHz for dual 32M as i haven't been able to get past it on this board thus far. i have only had the board for a couple days but it is very easy to work with for memory and clocking in general...gotta love PL5 at 430FSB+ with next to nothing for MCH volts.

***oh yeah...white slots or you are wasting your time

what bios are you using? i upated to 0308 and it seems to be a bit more stable.

I still can't hit 1200mhz on my micron d9's, i've tried several different straps, deviders, timings voltages you name it.

I think asus needs to release more bios releases.

Yesterday i tried my 1300mhz teamgroup . The run perfectly fine with 2.2V at 1300 CL5 . No problems with any dividers .
The red cellshocks did better with CL4 though .... 2.48V bios and 1200CL4 stable .

    Bios 0219 here .

    White slots

The white slots seem to allow a higher OC. I wish they woulda mentioned that in the damn manual.

with the blue slots, I was walling at 1134mhz but now i'm at 1164mhz.

    here are the results:

I checked the QVL for rampage and those sticks are not listed. Neither were mine though, but micron D9's are QVL for rampage.

At this point it doesn't matter what 9600 memory you're going to use, 1200mhz is not achievable with this board yet due to immature bios releases.

with bios 0207 i was only able to achieve 1132mhz.

with bios 0308 I am able to achieve 1164mhz.

So it is getting closer....I would check with kingston and ask what chips they use because this board is super duper picky with mem.

first off, it is 600MHz or DDR2-1200...no such thing as 1200MHz DDR2.

second, are you forgetting my screenshot above. D9GMH/D9GKX have absolutely no problem clocking well past 600MHz on this board....you simply can't with your kit of memory. stop blaming the board, there is nothing wrong with it.

Why is your everest showing x38? is your board a maximus flashed to a rampage?

Beware, there are differences. a NATIVE rampage board is not the same as a maximus, or a maximus that has been flashed to a rampage.

What makes you think I'm blaming the board? I'm sharing my experiences with my rampage with the kits above. My information is to be taken as reference and not fact.

So either help out by adding your experiences and stick to the topic or get the hell off my thread.

Beware, there are differences. a NATIVE rampage board is not the same as a maximus, or a maximus that has been flashed to a rampage.
can you explain the differences to me then? x48 is nothing but a re-labeled x38...

yes my board is a maximus flashed to rampage btw... and by the way it performs... it might as well be labled x48 (guess im lucky)

Right now I'm not exactly certain the full differences, but there are differences. Everyone that i've talked to that is using a native rampage is using completley different bios settings to achieve certain clocks and memory OC'ing.

If i were you, i'd flash back to a regular maximus. To me right now, the only true difference between the rampage and maximus is the rampage has more quad core tweaking options and possibly more memory tweaking capability however,

rampage boards are natively designed for DDR3, so using DDR2 is all backwards compatibility.
