Current AM2+ mobos don't have AMD's Power State Indicator spec enabled?!WTF?!!!

To my disappointment it seems that current AM2+ motherboards do not have all of AM2+'s features enabled. This new Nvidia 750a is the first chipset to include the AMD PSI spec. Click the links to read up about it. This technology would probably have greatly reduced power consumption at idle in all these Phenom reviews we've read. I really can't wait to see what the 750a can do, but I hate that AMD chipset based motherboards don't even have this option enabled yet. Do the 790FX and 780G chipsets not support this PSI spec yet?

If they do, it seems these motherboard manufacturers have failed again to make quality mobos for AMD, like the exploding MOSFETS we've already seen on 780G based boards.

I'll bump this post again after 750a motherboard reviews come out. It will probably make a lot more sense to you all at that time.

Quite sad actually if true. I was thinking about getting a 790fx board but now i think i'll wait a bit to see how this plays out and maybe until a few 2nd gen 790fx boards+sb700 appear.

Seeing how they put the "Crippled" SB600 on their first new Product release I would not be surprised at all if this were the case Good thing I have a Hardware Raid Controller is all I have to say.

How do you know none of them have the technology enabled [by lack of market hum drums - most likely]?

I posted a while back when AMD answered Hexus about the Phenom power draw, and they said it should be much lower idling, there seems to be a problem. No one expanded on it though. It's the PWM controller that decides and implements this feature.

The PSI technology is only yet available for >5-phase PWM circuitry AFAIK, like ISL6336, Intel VR11.1 compliant meeting Energy Star 4.0 specifications and includes (IMON) a current monitoring pin to detect real-time current and in low load situations to increase efficiency but drop to 1-2 phase operation, thereby saving current and power. It also allows Dynamic VID above the offset values but the input and output voltage is usually limited from 0.7-1.6v with a large current handling. A Phenom review in November mentioned this Phenom capability.

Foxconn with their SB700 MBs were wanting to implement this, maybe that's why they never made a 790FX till now. The controller ICs have only recently started appearing in retail though which could be one reason.

Thank you for that great info. I really hope to see FULL FEATURED 790FX/SB700 motherboards with this power saving capability in the near future. We spend most of our time in idle power states when just surfing the net so any power savings is great. That is especially true with the Phenom.

I don't get why motherboard manufacturers haven't started pumping out 790X & FX boards with the SB700 yet. Nobody seem to be on AMD's side these days.

I heard some rumours that AMD is preparing a new revision of 790FX to be released alongside the new boards with SB750. Dunno how true this is though

i just know of a bug fixed in SB710 and 750 (and so on...)

maybe they're now building the 790 in 55nm, too? i don't really think so

Well, looks like the first motherboard with AMD's Power State Indicator is now available, the ASRock K10N750SLI-WIFI nForce 750a SLI.

    http://my.ocworkbench.com/2008/asroc...LI-WIFI/g1.htm

"IES is first implemented on ASRock K10N750SLI-WiFi. It is based on AMD PSI (Power State Indicator) spec, which is a function for AM2+ platform to improve energy efficiency by disabling extra phases when CPU is at light loading. The exclusively designed Intelligent Energy Saver can effectively increase Voltage Regulator Efficiency by 16% and decrease its Voltage Regulator power consumption by 48% without reducing CPU performance and reliability."

Can't wait to see Intelligent Energy Saver implemented on AMD chipsets. Maybe it makes an appearance June 3rd at Computex along with the SB750.

Also the first Intel board with VRD 11.1 support is a P45 board the Gigabyte EP45 Extreme. Intel calls the feature Dynamic Energy Saver Advanced.
