In my case I had unlocked my 720 on another brand mobo before, so I knew for sure the 1.4x bios were the culprit and not my processor. With 1.51 I am on 4 cores at 3.4ghz stable 24/7.
Well on 1.4b2 i failed to boot when i tried unlocking, so if it fails now i'll just throw this on ebay and get myself a Phenom II x4 965BE or something cause this have only been able to reach 3,7GHz @ 3 cores and 1.502v and that's with 1.5v. Like one of the first 720BE to be released and I knew that this particular one didn't OC well but I thaught I could do it better then the guy before me anyways so i traded him for my 550BE

Gonna try 1.5b3 tomorrow and hopefully I get an extra core :P

i still cant unlock my 720, flashed to 1.5b3 a walla go and left everything on stock settings. still get FF error

it unlocks on a gigabyte board just fine. eh, i payed for a x3 so i cant complain. the extra core sure would be nice though considering the 550 i now have in the gigabyte board unlocked to a x4

Did you try clearing cmos then ONLY changing ECC to special and ACC to auto leaving everything else as AUTO.

OK there is an official 1.4 bios on the MSI website (2009-07-02), is it based on 1.5b or 1.4b build ? Anyone tried it yet ? Noticeable differences in stability over 1.3 ? Thanks.

So here are my bios shots, before I shifted to 1.53 bios. Now HT runs at 2000. Anyway these were the settings I used for 1600 run, but no go, goes upto the windows load screen and shuts down.

SO now what am I doing wrong. I have changed 1T to 2T and ganged and unganged mode also. Also moved the ram V's upto 1.67.

On a differnet note, what temp programs are u guys using. I am using cpuid HM, and the temps for NB and SB seem to be very very hig, dont know why....NB is around 45, and SB at around 36.

Try setting tRC back to AUTO.

Also is your ram rated 1.65v? Did you try pushing higher DRAM Voltage? Maybe give 1.8v a spin.

I find your CPU-NB VDD and NB Voltage on the high side considering you are not overclocking NB. Mine are 1.3v for both.

flashed bios to 1.5b3, hit f1 on restart to set bios options, only thing i changed was ec to special and acc to auto. get ff at next restart

in doing so i had to reset the cmos anyway and tried again, same thing, ff error

Will try that ram is rated for 1.65V amd edition ocz platinums. I took the cpu nb high as I was not able to get into windows. Will try the timings and probably lower V's in the NB. BTW is the NB V interchanged yet?

EDIT: changed TRC to auto, it didnt work...so either my NB is weak or the ram is weak...wonder which>

that ocz plat should be good well above its rating, i would blame the cpu or the bios since the NB dosnt touch the ram and the NB clock is just the IO clock

cpu/cpu-nb voltages should not be left on auto, coz x4 cpus require higher default vcore than x3s. Up them by +0.1v minimum, then try ec on special.

I got lost in all this bios version stuff

I'm on 1.3 now. At stock speeds as I had stability problems because I wasn't doing something right. Before I try to OC again, is there any benefit to going to a newer bios (OC stability or something) and if so what version is best right now

Ok, now I am confused with this board. Couple of questions:

    1. For the CPU and CPU-NB Voltages do we use CPU VDD and CPU NB VDD voltage or just CPU and CPU NB Voltages. I am on bios 1.53b, but it seems like earlier this was mixed up. So which one should I use.

    2. What is the DDR Vref Voltage for, and should we just leave it on auto?

    3. Similarly the CPU PLL and CPU DDR PHY Voltages..

    4. Which temp monitor are you guys using with this board. I am using CPUID HW, and it shows a around 40+ for NB and 35+ for motherboard, which in my books is quite high. What would each one of the temps readout in HW monitor, or is there some other program. I hate speedfan, never gets it right. So which temp is for which part of the board.

I think if we can answer a few more questions like this, it would be really helpful for guys just into OC'ing, and specially those new to AM3-DDR3.

    Thanks.

So far, I tried for 3.795GHz on the 955, but although it was Pi stable, Prime was just making the screen get scrambled and reboot. I dialed it back to 3.68GHz and was stable all around, but I'm still working on dropping the voltages a bit to just keep the temps as low as possible. NB is at 2.3GHz or so, and HT is at 2.07GHz. I think this is the OC I'll stay with. Went easy on the RAM though, because I don't trust them to hold out if OC'd. Will be moving from 1.3 to 1.4 BIOS tonight. Will post screens soon.

I cannot remember where I got the following info. It was a review and overclocking the GD70 with i THINK a 955. I thought it was bit-tech but can't find it there and not on google. Anyway hope it helps explain some BIOS options. I offer it AS IS, no warranty or guarantee expressed or implied. I did not write it I stole it.

    BIOS Settings:
CPU "FSB" Freqency: AMD's HyperTransport clock - leave this setting at 200MHz and simply adjust the CPU ratio because the Black Edition CPU has an unlocked multiplier, unless you're wanting to eke out a few extra MHz by increasing it slightly.

CPU Ratio: This is the CPU multipler. The stock setting is just 14x for the 2.8GHz 720 Black Edition, but increasing this in the 0.5x jumps will increase the overall frequency by 100MHz a time. At 18.5x this equates to a 3.7GHz CPU clock. Just like Asus's and Gigabyte's BIOS, the MSI is limited to overclocking all the cores together, rather than allowing individual adjustments like AMD's OverDrive software can.

CPU-NB Ratio: This is the frequency of the CPU memory controller and L3 cache. The stock speed is 2.0GHz, but we found 2.6GHz with a good CPU was doable on the GD70.

ACC: As previously discussed, this can be left disabled or set to zero percent, or with "weaker" CPU cores sometimes +2 percent helps.

DRAM Frequency: Phenom II CPUs support just two sticks of memory at 1,600MHz, but a faster memory controller alone is sometimes more compatible and yields a better performance than just faster DDR3 - the large L3 cache and low latency to memory means that the extra memory bandwidth equates to very little real world performance boost. In effect, this means buying 1,333MHz lower latency memory should work pretty much the same.

CPU Vdd Voltage: This is the positive voltage supplied to the FETs. MSI states (on another 790FX board with Phenom II) that 1.3 to 1.4V is typical safe value, however we've increased it here because we've added additional cooling to the CPU socket area with two large fans.

CPU-NB Vdd Voltage: This can also help with increasing the integrated memory controller overclock - we've not increased it here, but considering AMD claims 1.4 to 1.5V for the CPU-NB core for optimum results, the CPU-NB Vdd should also be ~1.3 to 1.4V.

CPU Voltage: Typically the 45nm SOI Phenom IIs can withstand quite high voltages so 1.5V should be OK if it's properly cooled. However it's worth mentioning that this is wrongly labeled, and is actually the voltage offset, as increasing the Vdd above adjusts this value as well.

CPU-NB Voltage: Like the above setting, working in combination with the CPU-NB Vdd setting will give you an additional voltage. Work with mostly Vdd and start with a small setting here.

CPU PLL Voltage: Similar/same as the VDDA on Asus boards and can directly reflect chipset and MOSFET temperatures so it's worth keeping an eye on the heatsink. 2.6 to 2.8V can sometimes make a difference: MSI allows particularly fine tuning on the GD70, but we found it didn't affect our overclock so we left it at the cooler 2.65V.

DDR Voltage: Just like it says on the tin - this is DDR3 memory voltage.

NB Voltage: Don't confuse this with CPU-NB - this is the 790FX voltage and the extra volts are beneficial when overclocking the HTT or PCI-Express bus. The same goes for the specific values for NB PCI-E, NB PCI-E I/O and HT Link Voltages.

    Other factors that help include:

Cool'n'Quiet: AMD's CPU power saving setting that should be disabled when overclocking.

CPU C1E State: Related to CnQ above this should also be disabled.

HPET or ACPI 2.0: If you're using a modern OS, the High Performance/Precision Event Timer should be enabled so that the clock speed doesn't fluctuate.

    Hey Guys

im new here and i search for a really good RAM Kitt.

    CPU: X4 955 BE 3,6GHZ @ 1.30 v-core
    Board: MSI GD70
    RAM: ?
GRAKA: HD 4890 OC Sapphire @ Scythe Muashi
    NT: 1200W Thermaltake ToughPower
    OS: VISTA 64

So my Question, runs that RAM Kitt with a AMD CPU?

    http://geizhals.at/a341555.html

    or

Are 1,9 and 2 Volt for the CPU dangerous?

Look out for the OCZ platinum 1333 AMD edition, or 1600 AMD edition, they are great value for money and OC quite well.

And thanks Poppageek for that info, helps me to get a clearer picture, specially since I was confused abt CPU VDD and CPU, as well as the NB.

BTW I have a feeling i have an issue with the memory voltage, because of which I cant get to 1600. HW monitor shows 1.61V all the time even after I manually set it to 1.65V...or is that some other reading. I have not set anything close to 1.61 on anything in the bios.

Hi guys, I thought I read somewhere in this thread that overclocking FSB rather than Multiplier, for example 3.8 from OC'd FSB, instead of 3.8 from OC'd multiplier, gives better performance. Panther57 asked about it here, but I can't find a response to his question. Anyone know how true this is?
    Thanks.
BTW, I got 3.4 Prime95 512FFT (2+hrs) stable at stock volts w/ 1.4 BIOS. Working my way up. 3.6 was unstable (on stock V) but will try 3.5GHz tonight. All else is stock.

Fail with 1.5b3 aswell... My stepping is "0904DPMW" so I thaught I had a chance. Waiting for the official 1.5 bios before I officially give up.

Although atleast I am not having network issues when I clock memory "to hard" now so back to play

Have you increased vcore? My 550 wouldn't boot as quad with stock voltage.
